  • really really bummed..

second attempt at atkins, my first week just ended and i feel just so bummed.

here are my stats: from 136, i went to 134 then 133 then back at 135.

what is going on? i have also started doing p90x lean and zumba. still the weight loss is not happening... and i have not cheated a single day either.the last time i did atkins, it was like magic now i'm just feeling really down about it, however my body feels mo energized and i feel lighter too.

could it be that our scale is about 7 years old and have not had a new battery? wishful thinking i know.

any insights would really really help. thanks.

Did you take body measurements, too? Sometimes we lose inches without losing pounds on the scale. It still means we're losing fat though.

i have also started doing p90x lean and zumba.
One time when I changed my weight training routine, I gained 5 lbs overnight. Of course, it wasn't fat. I was simply retaining fluids. And I knew I was still losing fat.

the last time i did atkins, it was like magic
Well, with that in mind, you're only setting yourself up for disappointment. Now it's not "last time". You have nothing to gain from comparing your weight loss then with your weight loss now. Focus on what you're doing now.

my body feels mo energized and i feel lighter too
See?! So you do feel better. A smaller number on the scale is not the only measure of success on Atkins. Did you take a look at the 7 questions in Chapter 12 of DANDR 2002?

If you stick with the P90X and are on induction there is no way the weight wont go down. Stick with it, it will happen. Im on my 3rd day of P90X and I hurt everywhere.

If you want to post a typical day's menu, we can take a look.

                Re: really really bummed..

I have had that exact experience. EXACT...hard core workouts (I'm a personal trainer and group exercise instructor, plus I run and compete)...here's what I had to do and I hope it helps:

For those of us not needing to lose a lot of weight, I HAD to track calories on fitday. Working out that hard (and I've done PX90,,it's INTENSE exercise), we get HUNGRY (even in ketosis) and i was just eating too much protein. Also, I had to NIT PICK a deit journal. Any little thing that caused weight gain, I had to rid myself of. If that scale went up for no "apparent" reason (salt, TOM, overindulging or cheats - I never did either), then I eliminated that food till I could reintroduce it, track it and figure it out. you have to be UBER diligent when you're not dropping a lot and never did eat horribly, like me.
Then I also know that intense exercise causes water retention while your cells recover. Oddly enough, when I let up slightly and MELLOWED OUT (against my religion! ha ha), I started dropping scale weight....SLLLLOOOWWWLLLY..but I could "FEEL" lighter, and no cravings, better clothes fit, etc all along, as long as I wasn't eating OBNOXIOUS amts of protein...I would be ravaging whole chickens going" this is totally out of the ordinary" well yes, it was!

I would NEVER stop this WOE cuz of the freedom its given me from cravings and blood sugar swings. it's been amazing to me, with zero of the side effects (ok, maybe a little iwth the breath!) but I have to KEEP tweaking it for ME and keep diligent records of food reactions...

                Hope this helps!

                    Re: really really bummed..

I agree with what everyone else has said....I exercise really intensely, 6 days a week (twice a day) and believe me, your body can gain as Georgiana mentioned above up to five pounds over night when your body is retaining water from working out....that's pretty normal.

Also, remember we build muscle too (which is very important) and that will make the scale go up a bit....so relax, you are doing great (you should still post a menu example as suggested above).

Why is it that you want to re-start Induction? Sounds like you've completed a clean 14 days, if so...don't be afraid to move to Rung 1....people have great results doing so.

Looking forward to hearing your updates on how things are progressing.

                      Re: really really bummed..

You cannot really "restart" Induction. It wouldn't be the same as when you started on day 1. All you could do is continue with Induction... but given that you only have 18 lbs to lose, it would be more appropriate to move to OWL.

Keep in mind that Atkins isn't a quick fix. What you need for long term success is to learn how to eat for life. Induction ain't gonna teach you that.

If you can stick with it, there is an extended induction area here. I only stuck to it for 3 weeks because I wanted to go up in net carbs. Believe me, my weight loss is up and down too. But I can tell you this, I've been doing Atkins since December 28, 2009 and my weight has not hit my 170's again, I'm fighting the high 160's, but I'll take that any day over fighting to get below the 170's.

Just try to stick with it and take waist measurements. I've lost 3 inches off of my waist, and fitting into jeans without the muffin top is what I'm going for right now.
