  • Is this normal?

    Hello all,
I am on my 13th day of Induction and I am a bit concerned. I have read the book and it seems that the average weight should be about 8-10 pounds the first week. I have lost 18. Can someone who knows alot about Atkins tell me if this is normal?

The first week? What book are you reading?

    I have lost 18.
In one week? How much weight do you have to lose?

I moved your post and mine into a separate thread.

        Re: Is this normal?

You should lose about 10 percent of what you want to lose during induction, so if you want to lose 100 pounds 10 pounds would be about average. If you want to lose 10 pounds, 1 would be about right.

Of course we are all different so don't go by what someone else loses. Men seem to lose more than the ladies and most of the time, the first two weeks is mostly water. I think your doing great and wouldn't worry (unless of course you only wanted to lose 10 pounds. )

In th first week I lost 13 pounds. I feel awesome so I am hoping that the weight continues to fall off. I want to stay in the Induction for a while because I have about 60-70 pounds to lose.

Of course, "should" doesn't always happen!

Some don't lose at all on Induction!!!

And setting up expectations of weight loss should always have an * ... results not typical. Your weight loss may be different.

The 2nd phase of Atkins ... Ongoing Weight Loss ... is vital ... Induction isn't about losing ... it's about getting your body ready to lose the weight ... on OWL.

Don't make it more difficult for yourself by staying on Induction too long ... or think that Induction is about losing!

That is really good. The good Dr said that once we are out of induction we should lose about 1 - 2 pounds a week. I lose in spurts, nothing for weeks and then 5 pounds followed by another 5 pounds and then nothing for awhile. What ever your doing, your doing right.

Where in DANDR 2002 is this?

I have to agree with J. here. Considering your degree of metabolic resistance (VERY low), staying on Induction for more than two weeks will not leave you enough time to move through OWL properly. Seldom are those who move through OWL in a hurry able to maintain their weight once at goal.

Have you read Chapters 12 and 13 in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)?

                    Re: Is this normal?

I am currently under the supervision of my endro dr. and he is actually the one that put me on this diet because I have an infection in my intestines. I am reduced to no sugars (very little) until the infection clears up. My blood work is already showing great success on the infection clearing up. What I have been told is that I have pre-diabetes on top of hypothyroidism. Weightloss has always been extremly hard for me and for some reason once I cut out all sugar and junk the weight falls off. Today is the last day of Induction so my goal is to add more green veggies. On induction I ate spring greens, asparagus, brocolli and spinach. I want to add alot more sald because I enjoy it. Im trying to stay away from fruit until I get my next sugar test. Any opinions? Advice?

Cheugen I think you need to get a copy of DANDR 2002 and read it. In one post you state that you want to stay in induction and in the last you ask about fruit. Please know that there are many rungs between induction and fruit, so you really need to read the book to do it properly. Good luck and glad it is working so well for you.

OWL Rung 1 starts with 5 net carbs more of Induction vegetables... so I see nothing wrong with your plan.

Im trying to stay away from fruit until I get my next sugar test.
You don't have to add fruit at all if you don't want to or if fruit doesn't agree with you. In any case, berries and most melons only come in OWL Rung 4, while other fruits come in OWL Rung 7. Until OWL Rung 4 you have the diary rung and the nuts & seeds rung.

Are you reading the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution?

Fruit is not allowed until Rung 4 of OWL. What version of Atkins are you following? On this board, we follow this book: Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR), 2002 ed.

                            Re: Is this normal?

My advice has nothing to do with the scale, but I cannot stress it enough: take photos. Front, side, back. Wear the same clothing (of course, change that up as you lose) and try to take the photos from the same distance. When I when seriously doing this before, there was a period of 6 months or so that not much weight dropped from the scale - under 10 pounds, maybe only 5. The photos showed the truth. As I'd been working out, gaining muscle and losing fat, there was a big trade off the scale couldn't show! I would much rather be fit and firm above my goal weight than reaching that goal but having fat and flab to show for it.

Good luck with your long term success! Whether you stay in induction for a bit longer or move straight on to OWL, you may have times that you plateau. Just keep working the program and it will work for you. I do agree, don't fear OWL. It is called Ongoing Weight Loss for a reason!
