  • Help! Going camping!

Soon we're going camping with the cub scouts. The food is brought in by the leaders and cooked in a portable kitchen. Always carby. The kitchen is always crowded and I know that we can't cook personal meals there. We'll bring a cooler, but we don't have our own campstove. It's just for a weekend. Any ideas for portable food to bring with us?

Hard-boiled eggs, cheese, whole vegetables, canned vegetables, canned chicken/tuna, cheese/flax crackers...

I would try bringing in deli meat (be careful on the nitrates), cheese, veggies you don't need to cook, maybe some pork skins to snack on . A little boring, but for a weeekend it shouldn't be to bad. Good Luck and have fun camping

A bowl with ready mixed salad, hot dogs (certainly you can get a spot by the campfire). For that matter you could pre-make some foil package dinners of a steak and veggies (or whatever you want) and set it in the coals. Me and my daughter are going to a Mother/Daughter Girl Scout camp in April and that's what they are asking everybody to do is to bring whatever they want to eat in a foil pouch and we'll all just put our pouches in the fire ring.

We're a Scouting family, and we take our own food. Just let them know you're following a special diet. If you can, set up your own grill or fire while there and enjoy some Nathan's or Hebrew National hot dogs! Nothing is better than (real) meat on a camp out.

Oh, I forgot this one...... If they haven't already planned the meals, suggest Barf in a Bag for breakfast (they might already be planning it as its a traditional Scout breakfast), basically its an omlette, you put a couple of raw eggs in a ziplock baggie, normally they have all kinds of ingredients layed out like cheese, onions, pepper, ham, ect and everybody just goes through the line and puts in their bag what they want, squooshes it until mixed, and then at the end of the line there are a couple of pans of boiling water where the leaders usually can cook several at a time. (If you can't tell by my pic below, I'm a GS leader, lol)

Check the ingredients in beef jerky. Often there's sugar added and it's quite carby.
