  • How do I do this?

I feel like I'm at my wit's end anymore with my weight. I ended up on disability for Lyme disease and Fibromyalgia from June through December. I was 244 in June and I'm now up to 272. I'm now unemployed as well.

My husband is about 155 pounds and certainly does not need to be cutting out his carbs. He's super active. I think that's part of the reason I've failed so many times on Atkins. I'd see him eating pretzels or something that I loved and would have "just a taste".

How do I keep from myself from self-sabotage? I don't know if any of you have struggled with this. I don't think it's fair to make him go on a diet, when he doesn't need to be on one.

    Any help or ideas?

    Hi Kristen,

So is your question -"How do you follow the Atkins WOE when your husband is not?"

If so, here is my story...summed up...After going on many weight loss plans for years and losing and gaining, usually gaining, I finally got sick of looking at my FAT self in the mirror. So since August, I have followed the Atkins WOE religiously.

Oh, about the husband problem. My hubby needs to lose ZERO pounds, just like your spouse. But the problem I faced was not that my spouse doesn't need to follow Atkins and he can have a carby snack when he wants to...the problem WAS THAT I WAS FAT...and I didn't want to be anymore.

This is a blunt answer, but it is REALITY. If you want to lose the pounds, you do not let excuses get in your way.

I never thought I could last 5 minutes exercising when I was 259#. But the day I started Atkins, I signed up at my Park District gym and joined classes. I was the BIGGEST and the OLDEST gal in most of the classes. But I pushed and got through 60 minute Zumba classes, bellydance classes, aerobic classes, as well as the yoga.

I DID IT because I didn't want to be FAT anymore!!! Plain and simple.

HOPE THIS HELPS, and sorry it is BLUNT and not sweet and sappy.

But I finally stopped making excuses to myself and I got serious about doing it. (That includes surviving parties, birthdays, holidays, 2 funerals/wakes).

I will be glad to help you any way I can.

    Happy Atkins Eating To You!!!

Re: How do I do this?

You are absolutely right. I am turning 30 tomorrow. I really want to make this change and get healthy in my 30s. Later this week, I'm going over to the gym to find out what their pricing is. I'm going to buy a journal and see if I can write down some things that trigger me to crave certain things. Maybe writing it down will help me too...this way I can see what's causing me to want to give everything up and maybe I can change it before I end up falling off the wagon.

My husband is extremely supportive of me. I just need to get my head in the game and get my mind in order. I don't want to only lose the weight because I'm fat, but because my other health issues are affected by it (Lyme, Fibromyalgia, PCOS). If I can get my weight in check, I may have a better chance of pushing the other problems into remission.

Thank you again for your help. I will definitely be back and I will definitely allow you to kick my butt when I need it!

Re: How do I do this?

        Hey Kristen,

Just a little word of encouragement - I have 3 sisters, all have battled an issue with food/weight/obesity. One uses Weight Watchers, one uses Medifast, and one has done her own thing... I'm on Atkins - it works for me and for my lifestyle.

My main point is that you have to find what works for you. If Atkins works for you then you need to find a control switch for when your husband is eating pretzels. Take that time not to lament what you can't have but to remind yourself why you're choosing Atkins as your WOE. Say it outloud if you have too.

Whenever someone apologizes to me about dessert or sweets or fries or bread - I tell them, "It's not like I'm allergic...I'm choosing a different way of eating." It helps me reaffirm that Atkins is a choice - the same way that being obese was a choice.

Good Luck with your journey - hopefully, for you and for I this is our Last time Around!

          >>I don't think it's fair to make him go on a diet, when he doesn't need to be on one.>>

Junk food is junk food ... and a pretzel is junk.

Is he willing to help you? Would he be willing to not eat <insert junk food here> at home so you can have a fail safe environment?

Atkins is a healthy way of eating for him, too ... you might be helping him stave off future medical problems.

He could eat at a higher carb level than you ...

You're right ... a journal will help ... what you choose to eat is your responsibility ... and your choice ... and your decision.

And a journal is a good place to be honest with yourself!

          Happy day before your birthday!!!!
