Hey everyone, I'm back and I'm trying to give Atkins another try. It's really difficult for me because my parents aren't supportive AT ALL with this diet, where as my fiance and his parents are completely supportive (they are both on Atkins, his mom is who I originally heard the diet from). So I'm kind of torn, I feel like I can't tell my parents that I'm on this diet, I don't really understand what their issue is, because as I see it being overweight and eating sugary foods isn't nearly as healthy as watching what I eat and not eating any sugar at all... When I was on Atkins before they were completely fine with it, idk, doesn't make any sense to me. Anyway, I'm on Atkins and I enjoy being on Atkins, and I just feel like without their support it'll be a little bit more difficult to stay on track. So I'm gonna come on to this board and find the support I need to get through it! :] Any advice and a little extra push and support would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks everyone- Jen :]

      Hi Jennifer,
I am really sorry that your parents aren't giving you any support this time around. Have you ever tried searching the web for some good low carb info to show them? I don't have any links off hand but I know there is some good stuff out there. My step father gave me some flack about Atkins and low carb when I first started. I told him to do some research on it and he has supported me ever since. Good luck to you hun and we are all here to support you!!!

Why do you think that you need "approval" from your parents? Just wondering.
Do you want a solution, or do you want me to tell you what you want to hear, which is what kept you the way you are.

Thanks guys :] Yea I have showed them various sources that explain how that diet works, but I don't know, I guess they're just stubborn :\. And I don't need their 'approval', but more so just their support. Even if that support is just not making comments about the diet and making me feel like I'm doing something wrong. I mean, and I live with them still, because I'm in college, so when I eat with them, I don't like the looks or the comments and they're just stubborn, is all I can think to describe them as, or rather close minded. I don't know, it's just a crappy situation, and being on any kind of diet, it's nice to have some words of encouragement from the ones you love and are around all of the time :\

They're fine, I mean my mom wants to lose 10lbs, but that's not much and she really doesn't need to.

                Re: Difficulty.

Well I feel somewhat the same! I really have no support from anyone but this board! Even though my dad is diabetic and eats a healthy diet...my mom and dad still dont think its "healthy" for me to be on Atkins...so I just don't talk to them about it.
And in my own home I have a son 6, and my bf. They both love pizza, burgers, nachos and all the GOOD stuff! Lol So, it can be difficult for me to prepare meals....but I've finally figured out that I have to look after myself now! Even at work...its hard to talk about with the girls as they all snack away on chips, chocolate and junk food, while im nibbling on cucumber and celery sticks! Lol
Anyways, if it wasn't for this board...I might not make it! I have absolutely no support but I'm doing the best I can, and all of you are so wonderful Keep your head high and do what's best for YOU!!!

                  Re: Difficulty.

Instead of telling people I'm doing Atkin's, I usually say I'm only eating meats & veggies. Or when they ask me what I'm doing cause I'm looking good, I tell them that I've cut out alcohol, caffiene, sugar and all refined & processed foods.

If they want to know more, then I usually start telling them about Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). I seem to get a better response that way.

                  YMMV.

                    Re: Difficulty.

As PolarBearKing said I have noticed if I describe my eating plan instead of naming it I seem to get a different response. I don't understand why some people are so "anti atkins" but there are a lot of them. The thing I usually get from people is ...Ah all that is..is a quick fix an you gain it all back. Well, of course that is true with ANY PLAN. but anyway, I don't argue about it. I just let my results speak for themselves. I have seen people that were so against it say well maybe if you stick to it will work. Well DUH I mean of course if you find a plan that is sustainable and enjoyable then yes you will stick to it. I feel better eating like that as if it was meant for me. So when people ask me what I eat I say fresh veggies, meats and I don't eat flour, sugar, potatos and the like. Everyone at work now are really supportive about it. Let your results speak for themselves.

                    God Bless and good luck

I just tell people I'm low carbing... some dont' even know what THAT means.... but if you mention Atkins.. boom.. they start with the advice...

it might help to 'educate' them a little about things.... maybe get your parents to check into the book... and the reasoning behind how it works...

                        Re: Difficulty.

Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate all the feedback. As for the 'anti-Atkins' people, me and my fiance went out to eat, I ordered a salad that came with tortilla strips in it and I asked for it without them, and my fiance told the waitress that I was on Atkins because he wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything else in the salad that would mess up my diet. The waitress went on this tangent about how Atkins is bad for you and all this nonsense, I was like... for real? She was really awkward the rest of our time there. There's been a million other situations where something similar has happened, that was just the most ridiculous one.

What doesn't make sense to me with my parents is, they were super supportive the first time I went on Atkins, but recently when I started talking about how I wanted to be healthy and lose weight, they were like 'you're not going on that Atkins diet again, are you!?' like it was some terrible thing. My fiance is supportive of me in everything that I do, and he's a type 1 diabetic, so he's basically restricting his carb intake as well. So between him and everyone on this board, I'm sure I'll make it through and be successful in this!! :]
