  • Endo's assessment...is Atkins a quack or is the medical comm

He is truly amazed at my blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol numbers, totally inspired and supportive.

Says the Canadian food guide and USA pyramid was never researched and all the grains and carbs have caused obesity and a pandemic of diabetes and no research too date has shown Atkins causes damage. No long term done yet but a two yr one will be completed in another yr or so.

He says ketones will not harm me in time it takes me to lose, the nurse said it will give me muscle weakness and brain development problems, she also said I am probably burning muscle, he says no I am not as eating the protein and exercising. He is totally amazed, wants to do close follow up and 110% supportive.

He says he thinks they will find at the end of this study that Atkins was not the quack everyone made him out to be and maybe the medical community will be found to be quacks as they told everyone to eat low fat and high carbs without any scientific evidence!!!!!!!! Mind blowing isn’t it how we were so indoctrinated to thinking this way.

Even the long term nurses study said trans fats are more harmful than say butter, and trans fats are found in a lot of hi grain cereals etc..anything processed and on Atkins we eat nothing processed.

He also says I am his only patient doing the program and doing it right.(takes a bow and thnx her friends from this board). He says he gets really frustrated of patients coming in and saying they are doing Atkins and they eat bacon and eggs daily then have a glass of milk, or a treat and screw up the process yet say they are on Atkins.

Boy I thought he sounds like some of us here who always tell people "read the book, do it by the book". The ones who want magic and take short cuts but wont educate themselves wont make it were his exact words and I believe we have all witnessed that here. That is not said to hurt anyone…just to validate and back up what a lot of us have been saying…read the book and do it by the book, don’t fiddle around with it and make up your own program then say doing Atkins.

He tells me no need to have blood lipids etc done every month as have been, only to test bg at bed and fasting as numbers so good and keep in touch with him if ever a question as he knows from the New England journal of medicine that is a good program for diabetics and all those grains being promoted are not good for everyone.

He says the Canadian Diabetic assoc will be putting forward a plan over next yr or so that is 40% carbs, 30% protein and 15% fat but I said I cant go there as will be on insulin again. He says do what I am doing, it works and don’t make up my own changes to the program as obviously Atkins researched and put this together in his manner for a reason.

He says that is why it is working.
He jut kept sitting there looking at all blood tests and saying Wow, this is truly amazing. He was so inspired and so inspiring. :speechle:
I am so happy but was worried if he poo poo'd me I need an endo with my diabetes.

He did all these refined tests and I have no kidney damage, blood vessel damage and no nerve ending damage. :flowerki:

I am so happy and told you all I would let you know the assessment results so here it is.
    Isn’t this just wonderful!!
    :laughing :laughing

Oh and I made an error was never sure of my weight, from his fanatastic big scales I am down 34 lbs not 31 lbs....even better ey??? :tigger

i've spoken with a couple of endocrinologists (diabetologists to boot!) and several cardiologists. They're quite open to Atkins and even advocate a low carb diet rather than a high carb one. There are a bunch of problems with mainstream medicine though and alot of docs (here in the US) won't "come out of the closet" and proclaim they are Atkineers or suggest low carb diets for their patients...the malpractice stakes are too high here in the States for most docs to openly support the low carb WOE.

Australian doctors (or at least my local ones) seem to think Dr Atkins was a witchdoctor and it's all eat low fat and lots of fibre! (I read carbs for fibre), and the carbs are just poison for me.
Even the fact that I've lost 16kg in 8 weeks, have virtually thrown way my 2 walking sticks, joined a gym etc doesn't convince them Oh, no - they predict doom and gloom.
So I'll keep coming and talking to you guys and gals and the doctor can get knotted! I know my BP is down, I'm not so ted in the face or so out of breath.

My doctor was very open to Atkins. She said she did think it would work if done correctly and would not be harmful. Her only concern was that it was too boring and I would not stick to it. I assured her all you have to do is be a little creative and you can come up with tons of new recipies! Your news is so great and makes me feel even better!!!!

Re: Endo's assessment...is Atkins a quack or is the medical comm

Old thread but worth checking out. When my doc growled at me to lose weight she said "out of all my patients that I tell they have to lose weight, you are the one that I KNOW will actually do it" she is familiar with my go get em attitude. When I walked in over 40 pounds less she looked up, looked back down at her clipboard and said "doing Atkins"? I confirmed that I was eating equal portions of protein and veg and eating a bit of low glycemic fruit here and there. She just looked me over and said "well whatever it is, its working and keep doing it". That was the confirmation I needed, and although having a fatty liver means my loss is painfully slow on the scale, my doc is behind me on it. She doesn't promote it from the rooftops, but she seems to realize that its helping me.

My own doctor was great. When I asked him what he thought about it he said, any diet you stick to and lose on is a good diet for you. The weight you are carrying is far more dangerous than any diet. He also said stick to the plan as given in the book. From the first he has been very supportive and my numbers have gotten better and better.
