  • question for those who have had success...

i was just wondering if those of you who have had success did it entirely perfect? or did you some days go over carbs by a few? i started this in july but moved to a new school and apt and with all the craziness i stopped, until Sunday (Jan 18 ). dr atkins was right to say that you should start this plan when things are calm in your life, because the moving thing and new lifestyle screwed me up...

ok so i am asking because i dont necessairly think its hard to follow but so far already i had an accident.... i got this salad on campus which i didnt even realize had no lettuce.. it was mainly green and red peppers, some broccoli, chicken, and already had dressing... which i didnt realize either... it was kind of sweet so im thinking it was a vinaigrette... normally i use ranch... (and im a college student.. poor, so u better believe i was going to eat it) :P anyway this got way longer than i had expected...

but... those of you who have experienced a good deal of success..
did you follow it exact, or did you somewhat do it, yet add your own twist? i have read the book, i actually have dandr, atkins essentials and atkins for life... so i know how everything works, but i mainly want to know how you achieved YOUR success. last time i followed for 2-3 weeks and didnt lose anything but i did feel a lot better physically...

    thanks sorry so long!

Boy, did I make mistakes.... :speechle:

Personally, I think there are two things that allowed me to be successful - learning the science behind the plan so I could make better choices and sticking with it over the long haul.

You will need to customize, especially in the later stages, so that it continues to work with you and allows you to stay with it. As long as you do it more right than wrong, you should be ok. Some people have to be incredibly strict, some don't. That's going to determine how much more right than wrong you have to be.

So, try your best to follow it, but don't give up all hope if you're not 100%. No one's 100%. No one.

Try to stick to it the BEST you can, and don't sweat the "mistakes" (especially like this salad one where you honestly didn't know beforehand). Sure there are times you have to compensate or whatever ~ but don't sweat the small stuff.

A Year of learning-from success and failures

I have not been perfect for the entire year BUT I kept at it. If I made a mistake or cheated, I didn't let it derail me for more then a few hours. I feel that being too, too strict can set you up for failure. As I learned that eating too much of something gave me a bad stomach ache or other problems, I found myself making the right choice more often. As I learned that I prefered certain foods and felt good about staying on course, it was easier and easier. I finally knew when I had it beat in Las Vegas over the Christmas/New Year holidays with my big family. Everyone wanted to go to one of those big buffets and I chose to eat by myself, a side salad from McDonalds because I didn't WANT to sit there and watch others eat, I didn't want anything BUT my salad. I was happy with my side salad and bottle of water. I won! I have been on this woe for one entire year-started 1-26-03 -started out at 325/now at 265. Just keep chuggin' along and you will get to your goal...new goal for me this year is to increase my exercise. :bouncelaugh

You can't do this without occasionally messing up...but you also can't do this without recovering from your mistakes.
I just did my best...every meal every day. If you can do 20 meals out of 21 correct each week there's no way you can fail. (unless that one meal was a whole pizza)
Most of my mistakes involved ordering something "safe" at a restaurant and finding it full of carbs anyways and then eating it.
So I stalled for a few days but I got thru it.
Just do your best and don't intentionally cheat...because you're only cheating yourself.

I always tell folks not to get "anal" about the carb count....the very fact that you are considering the number of carbs in the food indicates that you're keeping a fairly good ongoing count in your head. And the simple fact that you know to count carbs indicates that you're in the proper mode to succeed with this WOE!!! Since I'm in OWL I try to limit carb intake per meal to 12, if I go over then I just make sure my next meal is under 12 and if I have carbs left I'll treat myself at the end of the day to a low carb goodie. If you make it too restrictive and difficult you'll end up burning yourself out and possibly dropping the program which would be much worse than being 1-5 grams of carb over the limit

Hang in there and "go for the goal!!!"

                        NO cheating

We have a nurse at my job, who LOVES to bring in TREATS... I have ALWAYS participated until now!!! Told her I was following ATKINS, and did NOT plan to have any more of her goodies.... I have NOT. LUCKILY she is VERY understanding, and doesn't try to GET me to cheat. She is quite respectful of us who are doing this program!

I am really NOT tempted, because of HOW AWFUL I feel if I EAT sweets, and not just NOW since I have been off of them, but they give me palpatations, and a WEIRD heart beat, thus I don't want that in my body!!!

I am happy VERY happy with what I CAN have on this program... I have NEVER been a CARB JUNKY and really am having NO problem not having bread etc. anymore!!!! Sorry guys!

EVERYONE FALLS OFF OR GOES OVER OCCASIONALLY...ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE AROUND THOSE WHO AREN'T EATING THIS WAY ALSO...
MY BEST SUGGESTION IS TO OWN THE MISHAP, AND JUST BE MORE CAREFUL NEXT TIME! BUT DON'T GET DISCOURAGED AND WORSEN THE SITCH SINCE YOU "ALREADY MESSED UP ONCE TODAY, WHAT'S ONE MORE?..." IT'S TWO! AND THAT'S TWO TOO MANY! OOPS, WON'T DO IT AGAIN, USUALLY TAKES CARE OF THAT ONE!
ALSO, IF I GO OVER A BIT ONE DAY, I'LL JUST STAY UNDER THE NEXT DAY...SO THINGS KINDA EVEN OUT. :whip
