  • The numbers don't lie!

Our company has a wellness program which I just joined (after almost 4 months of doing Atkins on my own). Today I had my first appointment with the wellness nurse, and when she found out I was doing Atkins, she immediately began trashing it ("Your long term health will suffer", "People tend to always gain the weight lost back when they get to the end of the diet.", "You need carbs, zero carbs just isn't healthy", "What do you expect your arteries to look like when all you eat is meat?"). I gently but firmly set her straight on what this WOE is really like ("I eat veggies every day", "It's not zero carbs, it's low carb high fat", "People on Weight Watchers gain back their weight too if they go back to eating just like they were before") and didn't really convince her, BUT, when it came time to look at my bloodwork she was speechless!

Total cholesterol 169, LDL (bad cholesterol) lower than normal at 105, HDL (good cholesterol) higher than normal at 45, triglycerides low at 97, lower than acceptable TChol/HDL ratio at 3.7. Liver and kidney function was great, iron levels looked good, all other blood work was great! My blood pressure was also down significantly as was my body fat.

Needless to say she was unusually quiet after that....

    Atkins rocks!

I LOVE IT!! You didn't let that nay-sayer get to you! Good job. I am a nurse (stay-at-home mom/transcriptionist now) and worked for a GI group for five years. Our physicians advised overweight people who came in with problems due to weight (GERD, etc.) to eat low-carb. The AMA touts low-carb as one of the healthier diets out there and they are in talks to "re-write" the whole food triangle that lists breads/grains as the most important. Tell that "nurse" to put that in her pipe and smoke it.

She was probably 90 years old and went to nursing school via horse-drawn buggy. Or, she graduated at the bottom of her class!

congrats on your success with this WOE. It's hard for medical "experts" to deny that something is being done right when your tests show how well everything is running inside.

      Keep it up :clapping

Update on Wellness - Three Months Later

Well, it was time to see the wellness nurse here at work again...the one who trashed Atkins last time. As soon as I went in, she asked me if I was still doing Atkins. This is how the conversation went:

Her: "Are you doing "real" Atkins where you don't eat any fruit and you eat all that fatty bacon and sausage?"

Me: "I'm now in OWL and I eat berries several times a week. Yes I eat bacon several times a week as well, but I also eat flax cereal or eggs several times a week too."

Her: "Hmph. Well, let's hop on the scale and see how you're doing. WOW! You've lost 19 pounds! I'm sure a lot of that was fluid. Let's test your body fat. WOW! You're down almost 3% overall! I would have expected more for that amount of weightloss. Let's test your fitness level. WOW! You went from "fair" to "average"...we want to see that up to "good" next time. Let's check your blood pressure. WOW! 114/72 down from 128/76! Well, whatever you're doing, it's working. Keep it up and we'll see you in October..."

          Me: Atkins ROCKS!
