    Re: gall stones and Atkins

Some information on the gall bladder...

Your gall bladder is there to store bile which is passed through the liver, breaking down fat for digestion. When I had mine removed I asked "Where will my bile be stored then?", my consultant said my liver will continue to break down my food using the bile it already holds but the reserves of bile that would have been stored in my gall bladder may cause some heartburn/indigestion.

Gallstones are formed when bile contains too much cholesterol.

If the problem is only gallstones and the gall bladder is fine then the stones can be blasted with laser treatment if they are causing pain. If they are not causing pain then leave them alone. Two thirds of people with gallstones never feel any pain or other symptoms.

    I hope this helps,

            Re: gall stones and Atkins

just to chime in here! No gallbladder, doing Atkins for three years, NOT a problem at all!

All my problems with gall stones started when I was following a low fat diet. And, after reading all of 2 bigs post on this over the years I see why!

Do Atkins and climb the rungs, it is a natural progression to a healthy lifestyle!

and OT I go again, Carrie.......YOUR STUNNING!

I had my gallbladder out after my 2nd baby, had to crack me open! I have a 9"scar. The gas pain afterwards was HORRIBLE! Everyday!! Ever since I started Atkins I only have the pains like once a week!

                  Re: gall stones and Atkins

I recently told my hairdresser that I was following the Atkins plan and she felt she had to tell me how unhealthy it was. She said her mother had to have her gall bladder removed after eating low carb. That your body can't handle all that fat and protein.
I asked her if her mother did Atkins or just ate low carb? She didn't know, but continued to condemn this WOE as extremely unhealthy. So I just said I would look into it and left it at that. Which I did.
I hate having to defend this WOE all of the time. Everyone thinks its just meat, eggs and cheese. They have no idea that Dr. Atkins has us eating veggies, fruits, nuts and whole grains in this WOE! What is unhealthy about that?
