  • Vegetarians REJOICE!!!!!!!!

I am so exited! Ive done Atkins as a vegetarian before but my main protein sources have always only been eggs, tofu and cheese. When I gained back some weight after Hurricane Katrina took all, I kept trying to go back to Atkins but I just couldnt stomach the same old food. I finally (1 1/2 years later) decided to try using other soy products to see what would happen. I have lost 6 1/2 lbs in my first four days!!!!!!! Now granted I have done the eliptical machine for a 1/2 hour each day which probably helped a little, but I have been vigilant w/ Weight Watchers for a month and hardly dropped anything so I know this diet is working just as well as before. I am eating alot of Morning Star products, but only the ones with no sugar at all. The Morning Star Prime burgers, sausage links, bacon and the Whole Foods version of garlic cheese burgers all fulfill this requirement that I have decided to follow. They are all 1-2 carbs per serving. I will also incorporate some of White Waves products, the Wheat Meat (great substitute for egg salad. Half a serving is 3 carbs) and Seiten. There are alot of other soy products like Tofu dogs, other burgers, deli slices and sausage patties that have 1/2 to 1 gram of sugar. These I am avoiding for now and next week I will incorporate one of those for a few days and see if 1/2 to 1 gram of sugar will affect me much. I also am enjoying sugar free jello w/ homemade whipped cream, salads w/ tomato, avo, lettuce and cheese w/ dressing. The burgers are great with cheese, sourcream and my husband found a salsa with only one carb per tablespoon called Cousins picante salsa. Another find (if used in moderation) is Heinz One Carb ketchup. Be careful because they carry a low carb which isnt the same, make sure it says One Carb. I have had an occasional bar or shake, but I keep it to one or the other for the day. I hope this helps someone out there as I desperately was looking for someone who had a great result from eating these products. I thought for the longest time that eggs, cheese and tofu would be the only way I could do this diet, but now it is so much more "doable" and Im getting great results. If you are a fellow vegetarian and would like an Atkins buddy, drop me a line. I think we can all use as much support as we can get!

I am not a vegetarian but I thought I'd drop you a line of support. It has to be a bit harder on atkins as a vegetarian. I don't eat pork or beef myself, so I am limited in meat protein while on atkins. I have started adding tofu here and there though to change it up a bit.
Good luck. I am sure there are other vegetarians out there that you guys can bounce ideas off of.

I, too, am a vegetarian. "Quasi" to be more precise. I do eat fish and seafood - so that adds some options to my diet plans. I would love a veggie buddy though!... I am in day 7 of induction and am s...l...o...w...l...y getting over the 'atkins flu'. My goodness. I agree with the prime grillers option, and cannot iterate the 'buyer beware' enough....you HAVE to read those carb labels ESPECIALLY in the vegetarian food options, ......because they're in there, lurking....

      A great snack idea:

      Sesame 'wraps' :

2 to 4 medium to large sized spinach leaves
2 oz. cream cheese (whole fat)
      2 Tbs sesame seeds
      garlic powder to taste

Mix the sesame seeds and the garlic powder into the cheese. I usually just fold it in with a spoon for a couple of minutes to be sure the flavor is even. Spread the mixture evenly over the spinach leaf and roll it up. So good. And surprisingly satisfying.

Drop a line, anytime. I will use all the support I can get.

Hi there. I was glad to see your thread! My aim, after Induction, is to graduate toward doing Atkins vegetarian style, but I am not going to try to do it while on Induction. My personal opinion is that soy products should only be used in moderation, but hey, all things in due time. I admire you for your determination, it must take a lot to pay attention to your carbs and also not get bored with your protein choices. Keep up the good work! I start tomorrow.
