  • Not for nothin, but...

Hi, all. I'm not necessarily saying this is a success story, but I just wanted to vouch for the ability of Atkins in helping to keep me from gaining all my weight back and then some when I screwed up. Here's my bio:

    M, 30s, 6'0", HW ever 273, CW 215, excercise (yes)

    1992 - HW 236 - lost 45 lbs, gained it all back +.
    1996 - HW 268 - lost 65 lbs, gained it all back +.
    1999 - HW 270 - lost 60 lbs, gained it all back +.
    Sep/2002-Jun/2004 - HW 273
Jun/2004-Feb/2006 - got down to 250 and more or less stayed there.
2/27/06 - Atkins induction, lost 35 lbs in 2 mos, was fully committed to prog for that short amt of time.
    May/2006 - 8/13/07 - (cough) got a little lazy...
    8/14/07 - 8/25/07 - 222 lbs down to 215 on 12 days of Atkins induction.

During the lag time between my first real go at Atkins and my current one, I went back to eating mashed potatos w/ my protein, etc. I fluctuated in weight and inches here and there, but I WAS able to avoid totally ballooning again merely by eating more protein than carbs just in general.

Even though I failed in sticking with the program for 6+ months like I had originally planned, being more carb conscious since then has made this the only time in years that I was able to hover at a weight close enough to what I had originally lost. That has helped me feel that starting up again wouldn't be a huge ordeal. In only 12 days, I'm back at my low weight from the first go-round and I am mentally ready to stick w/ this for at least 6 months because I am now aware of the trap that I fell into 1.5 yrs ago when I thought to myself, "What could a hamburger bun hurt?"

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you've gotten off the Atkins wagon, don't give up and don't completely let yourself go while you're waiting for the next wagon. An odd benefit to this has been that after seeing how effective Atkins was the first time, I have never been happy at 220-225, whereas I would have loved to be that weight years ago on hi-carb, no red meat diets. Stay strong, peeps.

To me this is the "success story" here! along with the implication/wish for that "at least six months" to become "permanently"!

It's true there's always a wagon to get onto, but the view is so much better from on top than it is when spending half the time hovvering at the bottom of the ladder, looking up.

I just know you're gonna become an Atkins lifestyler soon!! Yippeee!

I hope 6 months, but I am a slow changer. Wasting a year was a kick in the butt tho, so hopefully you're right. If nothing else, the success I had initially and the realization that Atkins works if you do it right has helped me to blot out pizza, fast food, cereal, fried food, Gatorade (bottled sugar) out of my diet totally. And I was thankfully never a dessert person to begin w/. Worst case scenario was that I just hovered near my original losses. Even though I feel that I wasted a year of progress, I still haven't eaten any of that crap since I started back in 2/06.

Yup... The first time I tried to change to an Adkins way of life I had a similar experience... I was doing really well and was 20 pounds from my goal........ and then I ate wedding cake... and ate wedding cake and ate wedding cake.
        Why?
Oh why, did we have so much of it left over..
It made me sick at first but my body soon began to crave sweets again. That was quickly followed by carbs... bread, pasta and cookies.. Blah!!!

I didn't exactly go nuts but I sure didn't hold back.. You know you are in trouble when you buy an entire pack of those sugar frosted cookies at the market and eat the entire package in the car on the way home.. I was headed for the abyss and I knew it. Even knowing it, I drug my feet for another 10 pounds of weight gain... it took me a year and 1/2 to gain 34 pounds..

My sweet husband didn't say a word.. But I could tell he was worried. I finally looked around at things and realized I either bought bigger jeans or get a grip on myself.

I went back and remembered how good I felt on Atkins.. I really wanted that back.. Not to mention that naughty gleam in my mans eye. So like you I decided to give it another go. But this time I'm committed to doing all the steps... life is too short to keep playing this game..

So I see you as a success... you didn't slide down the slope like I did.. You held your ground...You can do this and so can I...

        Welcome back brother.!!!
