  • Not my success but a great success.

I started this whole journey for me. And because I am obsessive about having information, I read and read and read at the begining and, as it does if you read enough, it utterly changed the way I think about food and turned everything I thought I knew about nutrition on its head.

I was only a couple of days in when I realised what this could do for my DH, who though only a few pounds overweight is a type II diabetic whose drug dosages have been climbing streadily over the last few years. He'd been eating all along according to the usual recommendations - lots of complex carbs, low fat etc. And he was very, very good about "eating right". So good that the very idea of changing both horrified and terrified him.

So I had to take my time about persuading him to join me, he isn't big into reading and I knew he would not plough through the book. But I knew if I lost weight and started looking and feeling better it would go a long way to doing that. Plus I started drip feeding him with information, reading bits f the book to him and telling him about things I had read. And finally he bought into it completely.

Now, only a short 6 weeks after he started he is off ALL diabetes drugs, feels fantastic, looks fantastic and has lost a little weight too, although he had little to lose. His blood sugar is completely normal, completely.

Tomorrow is his birthday, and I cannot think of a better birthday present he could have. I wish there was some way to thank Dr Atkins. But all I can say is that I hope there is a heaven and he is in it.

Kate, that's AWESOME news! I am so happy for both you and your DH. The health benefits will just continue to come to both of you.

I just bought Gary Taubes book "Good Calories, Bad Calories". More reading in support of the low carbohydrate WOE.

I've read Gary Taubes book. It makes you want to go out and bash people over the head with it till they see sense. And its a big book!!

What a great success story... good health is perhaps the best benefit of all that the late Dr A offers us. Congratulations and all the best to you and your husband.

Re: Not my success but a great success.

Thank you all, I just hope this gives anyone who happens by here and is already diabetic great hope and encouragement.

Another interesting and good thing came of it also. I made a birthday cake. Not an illegal one, though it did push the OWL rungs a little!! It was this cake from Linda's site, amount as described there but made in a pie dish the day before, and then with a teaspoon of brandy drizzled over the base and allowed to soak in overnight. I topped it with rasperries and cream, flavoured with a little vanilla and Splenda. It was soooo indulgent and delicious!

Two friends shared it with us, so it was just a small, but very satisfying, slice each. They are not low-carbers, but thought it was absolutely yummy. One of them is a pastry chef and was so taken with the cake that she took the recipe and made it for her boss to taste the next day. And as of next week it is on the menu in the restaurant where she works, marked as a low-carb dessert with the carb count included!! I think this is GREAT - how wonderful it would be if more restaurants did this!

I have to totally disagree with the title of this thread! This is every bit as much YOUR success as it is hubby's! If not for your persistence, he would have never given Atkins a try and would still be taking diabetes meds. You obviously have a great marriage, which will now be a long and healthy one for you both! I salute the both of you! Happy birthday to hubby!
