  • Any tips?

Hi! I'm Jessica from Texas. It seems you guys have had some major successes. Your stories have really inspired me. I am new to the Atkins diet and I'm going to start tomarrow. I'm 5,5 and weigh 165-170 lbs. I hope to lose 40-50 lbs. About how long will that take? I will be having a small breakfast and lunch but Mom cooks big dinners. How much water are you supposed to drink, or is it just as much as you can? Do you guys drink anything else besides water or is it better to just stick with water? Thanks and I can't wait for some replys!

Please do yourself a great big favor and get the book( Dr.Atkin's New Diet Revolution)!!!!! You will be a million times more successful if you do.Most people on this board suggest the 2002 edition.

      Hi, petlover! Welcome to ADBB!

How much you lose depends on a lot, but especially how well you do the first 14 days! In the 2002 DANDR, Dr Atkins discusses how you should lose 10% of your overall weight in those first 2 weeks. If you lose less, your metabolism is a bit slower, and if you lose more, then you have aq higher metabolism.

Exercise and accountability are the key.

Keep a food diary and record everything you eat.

Remember that even though the label reads "O carbs" you may still be ingesting any amount up to .5 carbs and the manufacturers round down to 0. If you eat something that says "0 carbs", assign a number to it between .3 and .5... just to be safe, especially if it's processed!

Mimicking what cj7mom said, buy the book. It is the difference between doing this way of eating the right way or the wrong way.

        Hi Jessica,
I am new to Atkins also. I cannot tell you enough how much I agree with these folks. You must, must, must read the book. I had so many misconceptions about the diet until I read the book. Best wishes to you!

          Hi Jessica,

I'm 5'5 and started off at around 170lbs and it took me approx 4 months to lose 20lbs and I still have another 20lbs that I would like to lose.

Having said that, my suggestion is to find yourself an Atkins-friendly doctor or nutritionist to help you out? I noticed you are only 13 years old, and as you are still at an age where getting as many of the right nutrients as possible is very important. (quite different to us old folks )

Reckon you can get Mum on side with you? Maybe suggest to mum that you want to eat some of the dinner as leftovers for your lunches? Or maybe sit with mum and see what interesting meals you can both come up with that is Atkins-friendly? Mothers can often get overly-concerned esp if they see their children going on "diets" and may try and overfeed you until they understand what you're trying to do?
