Laura, I'm a little confused. Doing what you did seems good to me, but I think 2big or someone told me last week that it was considered yo-yo dieting, which could get you into trouble.

I'm doing OWL, but I didn't formally move up the rungs. I'm still losing an average of 2.92 lbs a week (according to FitDay). However, on 10/1 I'm going to a family gathering and I really wanted to go back into Induction until then. I've just been afraid of the yo-yo effect.

What do you think? Or you, 2big? If I "induce" from tomorrow (9/23) until 10/1 and then allow 5 more carbs after that and really follow the rungs the right way? Would that be ok to do?

Are you lowering your carbs to a net of 20 until then or removing all non induction foods till then? Many folk keep their carb level artificially low below their CCLL for faster weight loss. if you look in chapter 13 speed of weight loss was one of the issues in deciding whether to go to OWl or stay induction. That is what we call OWL/DUCTION or modified OWL here like what Pammie is doing.
Laurie did what is called a planned cheat read about it in your DANDR and the dangers involved. After you are out of ketosis you go back to INduction eating for a few days to get your ketosis going again and then you go back to where you where on your plan before the cheat. Laura said she has a very low CCLL so eating induction level carbs for her isn't much of a change.

Actually, it's not a very good way to do it. Not to offer excuses, but if I'd known then what I know now, I would have just passed on Christmas and birthday treats. At the time, I felt they were justified or even owed to me. I didn't yo-yo, I just didn't lose.

I do go up and down 5-10 lbs, but my weight can change 3lbs or more in a day, so I don't really consider that yo-yoing. It becomes an issue if you have big swings, like 20 or over.

I made mistakes (still do). My advice doesn't always parallel with what *I* did, but I think that people can benefit from my mistakes without making them themselves, so I'll be open with the struggles I had along the way.

          Thanks Laurie and 2big.

Basically I have been SOOOOOOOOO busy at work and home for the past two weeks that I haven't journalled everything I ate. I've just tried to be "good". I probably have had some days where I'm actually below 20 carbs, although I never intend to have those days.

2big, I guess, to answer your question, I had proposed to begin today going back only to Induction foods. That probably will also pull me back closer to 20 carbs a day, too, wouldn't it?

I'm confused. Maybe I should just start all over. One thing I know, I'm terrified of ever again getting back into the world I just left, where I think about food constantly and sneak around to get M & M's, and try one diet this week and another diet next week. This WOE is really working for me. I really am not struggling much with any part of it. I just worry (probably needlessly) about things like the family gathering because of the non-control in the past. I tend to take precautions and plan cheats ahead of time if I think I'm going to be tempted. For instance, I have a load of zero-carb candy bars and a tin of almonds hidden away here at work in case there is some kind of office party and there is nothing I can eat. I don't even know where these goodies are hidden. A co-worker has them for me and I have to pay her a dollar to get one back, and then she is under strict orders to only give me one dollar's worth per day. See, I'm a little crazy, aren't I. But, heck, I'm nearly 54 years old and still 100 lbs overweight. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

Oh hun, you're not crazy - you're brilliant!

You probably want to do some soul searching to determine what the best course of action for *you* is. If you have a planned cheat, is it going to be limited to one event? Or is it going to spill into the next week or beyond?

Are you going to have just the one thing you really, really wanted or use it as an excuse to eat everything in sight?

Are you going to get discouraged because you're put off schedule, maybe feel sick, think you've blown the whole thing, etc? Or are you going to enjoy the h*ll out of your cheat treat and get right back on it?

If you think that planned cheats are going to cause you problems, then I say avoid them at all costs. There are very few foods in this world that are worth that kind of torment, and there aren't any that are worth your self-esteem. If you can incorporate occasional planned cheats into your overall approach and they *help* you, then, by all means, do it.

For a long time, I was stuck in the entitlement mindset. But let me tell you, in my 31 years, I've never eaten anything that was worth being fat. I'm entitled to be thin and healthy. So are you.

            :hug

okay if you are planning to do a long induction under 20 net carb you can do the modified OWL with the foods you have control of if you can control them that is the modified OWL thing I'm a veggie nut and did my 7 month under 20 net carbs with rung 1 of OWL and rung 3 the nuts it was easy for me to control the nuts cause I got raw unsalted ones and frooze them then I had a crunchy food to snack on but wasn't addicted to the taste. They also have some stuff in them for helping to lower LDL cholesterol which i needed. Some folk can do thier entire OWL carb ladder and stay under 20 like Debby did last summer and boy did she shrink away, but I knew i didn't have enough control to handle the grains, beans and fruits without a pig out so i didn't add them.

You are going to be surprized how much better your food control gets as you progress because those nasty food as a drug meemories we have stored and our subconcious has access to will weaken as they are not reponded to and new "drug" memories are formed as we deal with the situations we used to use food as the remady for like stress or blues and now we use exercise or something else. This is where that theory about the more you exercise your will power the stronger it gets comes from.

Since you know this event is coming up call the organizer and ask what they foods are going to be. Offer to bring some of your favorite low carb foods but don't tell them they are low carb. No host ever turns down free food they didn't have to fix. Get your supplies ready find a cooler you can use be it a lunch size one or a fanny pack one. Plan plan plan. what if I get stuck in traffic, get stuck with no power, can't cook, no fresh water, all the possibilities and work out your plan now. then should it happen you are ready! Remember failing to plan is planning to fail!!!!

You can do it and are going to be posting a big topic about how you low carbed your event. We used to have a very long celebration topic where folk returing from vacation or a life even posted how they low carbed it. Many got great ideas from that topic. Maybe the board could start another one. Some of the greatest ones were a lady had a picnic at her cousins outdoor wedding with her own cooler of low carb foods. Another was about low carbing disney world. I loved Brook's crosscountry trip with her kids. She got a cooler you plug into the cig lighter and went shopping every day for fresh salad veggies and foods she could have no bars or shakes for her. SHe cooked hard boiled eggs and cut up all the cheese and stuff and had it in ziplock baggies and containers and just snacked on her portable Atkins foods the whole time. Did it cheat free too.

                Hi!
I've lost 31 lbs. I didn't even do induction this time, lol. I have been keeping it under 20 carbs, but i do have stuff that isn't induction friendly. All in all, i'm pretty strict with myself [Besides tonight! went out to eat with my sis, ordered chicken strips and ate it with the breading]..
