  • New Again, please read..

Ok I have re-started Atkins today, but here is my delima. I quit smoking in January....I substituted smoking with Diet Coke...Caffine Free. I drink one 20 ounce Diet Coke a day....this is what keeps me from smoking and I do it FIRST thing in the morning. I hate coffee, so in the am I get my DC with alot of ice, go out on the front porch and drink it in peace and quite just like I did when I smoked. I smoked for 17 years and smoked around 2 packs a day, so I do not want to go back to it as I am still a NEW NON-SMOKER. That was the hardest thing for me to do, so I can't give up my drink lol.

I have done Atkins in the past and I eat sugar free jello and it does not stall me, so how bad is this for me?

    Hi Joy,

I feel your pain. I quit smoking in October. I smoked for 12 years. Out went the cigs and in came the weight. 20lbs. I'm starting today again. After a 1year absense.

    Good Luck.

Can you drink the Caffeine free diet Coke?

Caffeine is what the good Dr frowned upon moreso (I believe) than aspartame. If you are one of the people (like me) who don't stall due to aspartame intake, just try to limit yourself to 3 servings per day, caffeine-free, and you're going to be just fine.

Congratulations to both (Rich and lima) of you on kicking the nicotene habit!

Yes I always drink the caffine free diet coke. I just need the DC, not the caffine lol.

No offense to my dear friend Cleo, but the good doctor recommended we stay away from both caffeine and aspartame. Aspartame has been known to stall weight loss, and in fact there are studies to show that for some aspartame can even cause weight gain. Not to mention all sorts of other health risks with the stuff. (Numbers 8 and 9 in the Rules of Induction.)

Good for you for quitting smoking. Think you could substitute something else for the Diet Coke? Perhaps caffeine free Diet Rite? Or maybe if it's the fizz you like, start switching over to club soda with some lemon or lime? Don't forget that soda, coffee, tea etc don't count towards your daily water intake either. You'll soon love your water too. Welcome aboard!

I won't give up my 1 DC a day, I do not want to smoke anymore lol. As to the artificial sweetner, it is known to cause stalls in some people, not everyone. I lost 80 lbs before from drinking sugar free koolaid lol, so I know it doesn't affect me. As for the water, I am drinking at least 100 ounces a day. I only drink the DC in the monring to replace my morning cigarette. =).

It sounds like your reasons for WHY outnumber your reasons for WHYNOT, so I say go for it. If you can switch it for something more legal with the same or better results, then do it. But, if giving it up is going to disrupt your routine and possibly have a negative effect, then don't.

I have been drinking a can of Diet coke for the past 3 days, and i still dropped a few pounds....but the only reason i got that was because i went camping this weekend with my boyfriend and his family (as i do every weekend) and the store i went to didnt carry Diet Rite. So this weekend, i believe i will go to the store around here that carries it, and buy some BEFORE i go camping. LOL. CONGRATS on kicking that nasty habit Lima you should be very proud of yourself!!!! :nod
