  • Planning on doing Atkins - But don't know where to start

I figured I should start doing something about my weight and fitness, I did a 22 mile 3 peaks trek last weekend, was dead chuffed that I did it but was jealous that I came in an hour behind my friends.

I've been reading the posts on this forum and it is very confusing, Atkins seems to be like no other diet so I get the feeling it will be tricky at first.

I won't be starting until at least next week as I have plenty of food in my house that I would like to use up first before starting the Atkins.

Where should I start do I really ned to go and buy the Atkins book or can I start without it??

I think my main concern was the meals, I always eat sandwiches, and potatoes but I do want to change so I will need to come up with some original ideas hopefully this website should help.

I liked the bacon, egg, sausage muffin idea. For lunch I was planning on just having my usual sandwich filling of tuna and sweetcorn but in a wrap instead of a sandwich. I was going to ask one question though, I have a george foreman grilling machine that is great for cooking all sorts of things but as Atkins is a high fat diet should I not use this if I was going to cook a Steak??

I guess these are all questions that I can reserach and look into before I start the diet I know I'm a newbie so I will probab;y need some gentle nudging in the right direction regarding the food I'm allowed to eat.

The best place to start is with the book. There is a lot to know to get started right. Its not that hard once you know the rules. You cant get the book used real cheap or under $10.00 in Walmart. If you are not going to start today, go get the book and we will be happy to help :nod

I have a george foreman grill and use it all the time to cook my meats. I wouldnt think it would be a problem to cook a steak with the grill if you prefer it that way.

        welcome se99paj

The place to start is to make a serious, spiritual, life-long, binding committment to yourself to stop eating the frankenfoods that harm you.

Then be faithful to it. This is loving yourself on the highest level.

For me, those foods were potatos, bread, sugar, rice and white flour.
I then devoured the 2002 DANDR, starting carrying a copy of the acceptable induction foods list and threw out anything in my kitchen that wasn't on the list.

as I read the book and learned more about Induction I eliminated other foods that I discovered were harmful to me, such as coffee and equal and aspartame. I stopped eating or drinking foods and beverages that would cause any kind of blood spike and i cut down diet soda to one per day.

corn is also a food I chose to eliminate. corn is a high carb food.

i use my george foreman grill daily. it is terrific for doing a quick piece of meat and some veggies. i especially like to do mushrooms on the grill. fast and yummy.

don't wait. get rid of your carbage now and start eating healthy wholesome meat, fish, eggs and veggies.

Atkins is so much more than a diet. It is a permanent lifestyle
that can restore you to good health and vitality.
Suffering is necessary until you realize it is unnecessary. Eckhart Tolle

Yeah Atkins is like no weight loss program I have ever encountered.

Eating all that fat and proteins and so little carbs was hard to accept but now that I am on the program and eating alot of food you would not see on other weight loss programs and losing 8.7 lbs in just two days of the 14 day induction period has made me a believer.

Definately read the book and it gives you a thorough understanding of what this program is all about and with wisdom comes success.

P.S. I did what as already been mentioned...I didn't wait to eat all the junk food in my house to poison my body more but got going into the program ASAP and glad I did so.

You have made the first step, now start running to a healthier you. ha

Definitely get the book and read it...Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002, DANDR for short. Nothing like learning right from the source, right! :joy

There is lots of info on the board, yes, but the book lays it all out in a methodical way that's easy to understand, and it'll explain the 'why' behind the diet.

Yes, you'll have to make some changes, and some of the foods you mention won't be allowed for a while, but you'll eventually get to eat things like wraps and corn again when you get to that stage.

I'm pleased to hear you say you are going to do your research..that's exactly what a person needs to do before they start, so good for you!

Also, take the time to read the stickies in this, and any other forums you go to...they are full of great information.
There's also a forum called 'Most Memorable Posts' that has excellent stuff in it as well. Not all of it may be relevant to you right now, but it's a good resource.

In the meantime, you can do something to prepare for your start date: begin getting used to drinking 64+ ounces of water a day. The general rule is 64 ounces, plus 8 additional ounces for each 25 pounds you are wanting to lose. Drinking water is a habit that you form, and once you get used to it, you'll be amazed at the differences in your body.

All the best to you...stay in touch!
