  • Falling off... impossible to avoid?

    Hey all,
Ugh... 3rd time back on induction and I always seem to fall off two or three days into it. I set out with the best intentions but I never time it right and falling off seems inevitable!

Last time I tried to start induction again, I got 3 days through it and then it was my 20th birthday... so obviously I was forced (not unwillingly!) to drink stupid amounts of alcohol and eat the huge cake my housemates had baked for me.

That was a couple of weeks ago... this time round I failed on day 2 (today). I am a student and I was on a clinical placement in hospital with 2 doctors. Everything was going fine and I expected to be home by lunchtime (so I'd brought no packed lunch/money)... when one of the doctors mentioned that a drug rep was hosting a meeting and would be giving us all lunch, then afterwards he'd teach us some more stuff in the afternoon. Quite apart from the fact that it'd have been way too rude to refuse the drug rep's lunch meeting, I physically can't last a full day on my feet, running up and down flights of stairs all day, without a square meal at lunchtime - otherwise I faint!

Does anyone else struggle with hurdles like these? It seems they jump up at me all the time... I can't seem to go 14 days without unavoidable carbing :eating

We all have hurdles in every day life that arise that challenge out Akins way of life, but they can be overcome. There are always birthdays, vacations, parties, special occassions, lunch meetings. The list could go on and on.

One thing that I found that helps is letting everybody I know, know about my way of eating. That way, when my birthday comes, everybody knows that I will not eat a cake. When I'm at a party, nobody "forces" me to eat or drink anything I don't want to. I've found that when people know what you are doing to become healthy, they will be supportive and not put you in situations that will sabatoge you (usually).

I have many lunch meetings and I don't have any problem picking the meat out of sandwiches or only eating what's acceptable. I am usually prepared with a salad or some snacks at the office, so if there is a lunch that I can have little of, I always have something to eat later. I guess what I'm getting at here is planning ahead and being prepared.

You can overcome the obstacles. You just have to be committed to what you are doing and stick with it. Remember that you are doing this to become healthy, so don't let anything stand in your way.

Nothing is impossible if you really want to succeed. So, you hav to be honest with yourself about your goals and expectations.

As for drug reps...I worked in a few hospitals and currently work for a group of physicians. Drug reps won't be offended if you don't eat their bagels, pizza, chinese food, sandwiches and whatever else they drag in. They are there to sell their products---to them it's business not pleasure when they give you mugs, pens, note pads, etc.

Again, nothing is impossible if you really want to succeed, but you can always make excuses not to.
