I believe you have to wait until the soy rung. Welcome to ADBB. You might want to stop on over at the spotlight forum and introduce yourself.

The book explain about the rungs better then I could. It is when you add foods back after the Induction period. Shellfish has carbs but it is still a free food.

You can get yourself a free account at www.fitday.com It will help you keep track of your carb counts and what food you are eating.

Yes - soy beans are introduced in the Legumes rung of OWL.

OWL is in reality the main weightloss phase of Atkins - Induction is just a kickstart to your weightloss unless you have 50 pounds or more to lose.
Introducing the various food groups in Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) as Dr Atkins suggested will help your body get used to more carbs and help you find your Critical Carb Level for Losing (CCLL) as well as finding out if some foods affect you adversley (sp?).

2big has described the progress of Atkins as similar to building a house - ie induction=foundation; OWL=walls; pre-maintenance=roof - so you need your walls to be strong enough to support the roof. I have put it very badly but cannot find the post where she laid it so logically

If you havent read that far in your DANDR (you have reread that recently - we go by the 2002 edition here which Dr Atkins wrote with several changes to the rules in the older editions) why not visit the OWL forum and read some of the stickies to discover how to do it in the most beneficial way when you move off induction?

You will see when you read the 2002 DANDR that no food - except water - is a 'free food' now.
You are limited to the quantities of veggies, (max 20 net carbs and 3 cups per day) cheese (3-4 ozs daily) cream, splenda etc and meats and eggs etc are to be eaten when you are hungry and then only till you are satisfied - no licence to 'eat all you can' :no
Here is a link to the list of 'allowed foods'

And one to the Rules of Induction

which might get you on the right track till you can get hold of a 2002 DANDR, but the book contains much more than those FAQs so you do need to read the book!

Oh - sorry - forgot your question about shellfish - if you open up a free 'account' with www.fitday.com you can punch in the particular shellfish and amount you intend to eat and find the carb count. It will vary depending on how it was cooked so make sure you enter any butter or oil etc to get a true figure.

Many of us use fitday to help us with our carb counting as well as track our weightloss and fat/protein/carb ratios. Once you get the hang of it it becomes a useful tool.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
