  • Extended Induction or OWL???

    Hi all!

I'm on day 12 & am really considering moving on to extended induction for a couple more weeks. I know alot of us started about the same time & am wondering what you guys think. Will you stay on extended or move on??? I never went to get my new scale-I decided that with what I have noticed & others have noticed I will stay off until day 14-Saturday (I know it's working!!!), so please disregard my ticker for a few more days. Everyone here has done a great job & I am glad to be apart of such a great group! Keep up the GREAT work you all! I know I say this alot but you all have helped me tremendously! Thanks. :hug :hug :hug :hug :hug

    Hi.

Have you read the sticky in this forum, called "DAY 15: Should I stay or should I go (to OWL)".

Moving on depends on a number of things, so it's a very individual decision.

Maybe I worded this incorrectly-I am not asking what others think I should do or vice versa. I am asking the ones that started the same time I did what they were thinking of doing. I would not expect my decision to have any effect on what they are doing or vice versa. I apologize for any confusion.

Hi there! When I first began Atkins, I decided to stick with Induction long-term. However, I modified it, making carbs probably at around 30 a day by incorporating Smucker's Peanut Butter every night, which proved to be a really effective means of keeping me from veering off course. (Since I lost readily with it and it was a natural, healthy, low-carb source of protein, I allowed it.)

So, AllyJ, you are already on Day 12 ... how are you feeling?

As an extreme side note: I have a 4.2-pound turkey breast roasting in the oven right now. 325º for 2 hours. Throwing it together yourself always tastes SO much better than anything from the deli!!

So, in other words, you moved onto OWL.

              Thanks Sheila -

I feel great, I am much more energetic. I actually do things when I come home from work now. Don't get me wrong with three kids and a full time job I have always worked :yes but now I find myself doing soooo much more!
I found myself cooking last night after the normal stuff of getting the baby ready for school, washing clothes, etc. at 10:00 at night. I used to be in bed exhausted by 10:00 at night.
I work out everyday in 1 form or another, walking, weights, riding a bike -If you had even suggested me do this after work a couple weeks ago I would have laughed :yes so yes I feel a tremedous difference.

Thanks for your response & you look fabulous by the way! :hug

Actually, on ADBB, that's called a Modified OWL: incorporating OWL foods while keeping below 20 net carbs daily. You still follow the OWL rules in regards to adding foods, etc.

"Extended Induction" means you are simply extending the Induction phase, but you are still following the Induction Rules, eating only the foods on the Induction Acceptable Foods list.

"Modified OWL" means you are remaining below 20 net carbs but you are incorporating OWL foods and following OWL rules. This is legal because back in the day Dr. ATkins was alive and you called the Atkins Center Hotline, Dr. Atkins' nurses advised that you could do something like that.

"OWL" means you are increasing carbs and adding OWL foods. Sheila wrote that she upped her carbs to 30 and added in peanut butter (from the OWL nut rung). So technically, she did OWL.

                  Editing to add

The ADBB terminology is based on Induction Rules 3-5. According to the Rules, if you eat more than 20 net carbs, you aren't doing Induction; if you eat fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy veggies, dairy other than cheese/cream/butter, you aren't doing Induction; if you eat anything not on the Acceptable Foods list, you aren't doing Induction.

                  3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three loosely packed cups of salad, or two cups of salad plus one cup of other vegetables (see Acceptable Foods).

                  4. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.

                  5. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.
The terminology is a bit tedious, but it's necessary in order to avoid confusion. I was around here when "modified Induction" meant anything from extending Induction to modifying OWL to doing your own low carb program--it was very confusing to everyone and alot of arguments ensued out of that confusion. For example, someone getting upset because they are told they aren't doing Atkins Induction if they are eating carrots and corn on the cob or (my all time favorite) someone getting upset because they are doing their own low carb diet--a combo of Atkins/Carbohydrate Addicts and South Beach-- and are told they aren't doing Atkins.

                    I with you Not2Late,

When we stick to the rules, it leads to alot less confusion, and makes the plan alot easier to follow.

Most people forget that, Not all carbs are the same, they forget that they are trying to learn what foods trigger them.

I say, if you are ready to move on to OWL, then you are ready to find out what your Critical Carb limit is, and are prepared for either a complete slow down or stop in wieght loss, and even a possible gain.

Gains on OWL are typically due to over-eating fats and proteins. You'll lose weight on OWL---that's why it's called On-Going Weight Loss. For some reason it has an awful reputation that as soon as you go on OWL, you'll stop losing weight completely.

It's also the phase where you'll find out where all carbs aren't all bad and where you'll really learn to eat in the "real" world.

I'll echo what Not2Late said. OWL will not necessarily slow your weight loss.

I did extended induction for only one week, and I gained 1/2 pound. This is my first week on OWL (added 5g of carbs from veggies) and already I'm down 3 pounds just this week, and it's only Thursday.

I say MOVE ON! Stay on rung 1 for awhile if you want. No ones forcing you to allofasudden start eating fruit and dairy and nuts and whole grains.
