  • cigarettes and atkins?

    I am in the process of quiting smokign as well, but that for me is not something I can just do cold turkey. I have gone from 1 pack a day to 3-4 cigs a day...I was just wondering if anyone else smokes, and how it makes them feel on induction. It seems like every time I decide to have a cig I get really light headed and tired....but I see this as a good thing, since I started atkins I have cut back on my cigs also...I was about 5-6 a day when I started.

    I'm a smoker. I haven't quit yet, but I'm getting there. During induction I dind't have any problems. I just figured I needed to do one thing at a time, and now that I'm at goal I need to address it.

      yeah, I am trying to do lots at a time...I quit biting my nails a month ago, now they are long and pretty...I have never seen them this long in my whole life! So thats kinda cool and I quit smoking about a year ago, but picked it back up in December due to stress...I think the way it is making me feel now has made me cut back...it just gives me this icky lazy feeling. Hopefully by my wedding I will be long nails, smoke free & skinny! Good luck with your quitting also btw

        To be honest, quitting cold turkey is the best. Just like sugar, you will have withdrawls. They only last 72 hours for the physical withdraw peaking the last day. The rest is going to be Mental. You have an advantage though, By eating the Atkins way of life you already have control of your blood sugar, while most people don't and their glucose goes nuts for those few days.

        By the way, I have stopped nicotine for 1 year, 1 month, 24 days, 19 hours, 11 minutes and 15 seconds (420 days).

          Lots of ADBBers have quit smoking and some other habits. We all hang out in the addictiond forum. You can get some great advice over there.

            I quit twice and on the second go around I have been smoke free for about 20 years now...

            They are just bad for you and way to damn expensive now too. Johnny :guns

              Trying to change a lot of habits at once is a challenge. Maybe just focus on one at a time? Get your blood sugar under control, then quit the cigs. I quit cold turkey, but then I had an outstanding quit method:
              • 1. Move to Australia where the cigs are way expensive, they don't have your favourite brand, and nobody can smoke in restaurants.
                2. Become poor student so that you really can't afford the cigs.
                3. Move in with non smokers.
                4. Spend all your time studying in the house with nonsmokers.
                5. Leave late for EVERYTHING so that there's no time to light up when running to catch a train.

                haha yeah...i live with a nonsmoker, i used to smoke in my old apt when i was single, but i respect his health and dont smoke in our apt now...I have done it cold turkey before, the first time i tried to quit...and i was REALLY depressed for 2 weeks and couldnt get out of bed...and all I did was EAT...then when I actually quit the second time I tapered it off...and didn't have any probs...so that's what I'm doing this time...and I don't really think me quitting cold turkey would be that good for my diet...I would eat everything in the house...it would just be way too much to take on at once.

                  Because I'm lazy I'm mostly C&Ping my own post from another thread, with a couple edits to update it:

                  I smoked for 22 years and I knew no way in **** was I ever going to stop. When I started Atkins a couple years ago I read about how this lady named Brook quit smoking and started Atkins on the same day. I thought she was nuts, but she's at goal and still smoke-free. She posted here about it. Three others also quit smoking during that first time I did Atkins, and all three read the book Brook suggested.

                  What made an impression with me is that their quits were all relatively painless (at least from what I expected). I couldn't even go an hour without a smoke, much less a day. I decided I wanted what they had and picked up the book for myself. After reading DANDR reading this book is a walk in the park but it made an impression. Before I finished I knew I was going to quit smoking and felt at peace with it.

                  The day after I finished the book, Jan. 5th 2004, I quit. That was 1 year and 5 months ago. I fell off the Atkins wagon the past year (which is why my new start is Jan 2005), but never the non-smoking one. Since then I know 2 people in "real" life (not online) who also quit after reading the book and are still not smoking. It's a cheap book and well worth looking in to, especially if you're struggling.

                  The book is Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking." My paperback copy was around $8. Allen Carr is an English author and is better known in Europe than he is here in the States, so I've included the Amazon.UK reviews in the links. You'll see the B&N reviews are from an older revision of his book, but the newer revision is out and it's basically the same. There aren't as many reviews tied to the newer release yet. I always wondered why they didn't combine reviews when a book goes in to a newer revisions? It's the same book!

                  Anyway give these a read. You'll find them more compelling than I ever could be (and the reviews, along with knowing others who had used the book, were what sold me!):
