Congrats on your loss. Now to answer your question...

There are 3 weight loss phases of Atkins: Induction, On-Going Weight Loss and Pre-Maintenance phases. Each phase has a goal or goals. Induction's purpose is to switch your body's metabolism to use fats as a fuel source.

On-Going Weight Loss' purpose is to continue losing weight, while adding carbs because everyone has their own carb tolerance level, which you need to know in order to help you maintain your weight. See, only those people with a very high metabolic resistance to weight loss need to keep their carbs between 15-20 in order to lose weight. Most of us don't.

Pre-Maintenance is to get you ready for the Maintenance phase, by adding more carbs to your diet. You're still losing weight during Pre-Maintenance too.

The OWL and Pre-Maintenance phases are designed to help you learn about your body and get you (mentally and physicially) used to eating low carb in the "real world".

What's practical about learning how to fly a plane if you're not taught how to land it? That's what happens to folks who don't go through the phases: they never learn how to do Maintenance and they re-gain their weight and are back here in a few months doing Induction again OR they struggle through Maintenance.

Sorry Patty - looks like Megs just confirmed what I told you about the need to do OWL - instead of going from induction to pre-maint.

Dr. Phil, who i really like, said the other day you cant change anything until you get to the point and say "i'm sick and tired of living like this and i will not go on one day feeling like this."

since starting this diet i tell myself that and it is the kick in the but i need. maybe thinking this way can help you stick to what you know you really need to do.

          good luck
