    Hello

I have done Atkins in the past and have been successful for about three weeks and then I plateau and even gain a pound or two...I am now in ketosis again but I am eating low-carb but also low-fat. I eat nuts and and salmon as my prime source of fat and I trim meet. Will this speed weightloss...has anyone else done this?

I do not want to plateau again and I think it was because I was eating too much food like bacon and lots of cheese. I turned the strips purple when I did it before but did not continually lose weight.

So what do you all think of low-carb, low-fat!

Plateauing after 3 weeks is really common...give this a read, and also read the link it contains at the bottom. What you were going through was normal.

Since the is the 14 Day Induction Forum for newbies, you'd probably get a better answer to your low fat/low carb question in the "Low Carb other than Atkins" forum.

All I really can say is that I know that doing Atkins by following Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002 works, but you have to go beyond the 3 weeks and stick to it through the plateaus.

Plateaus are normal, and to be expected. Your body needs time to adjust to the weight loss and we all need patience to make it through those times.

That's why we tell people to put the darn scale away and go by how your clothes are fitting and what your measurements are telling you. :yes

hey peter! i kno this is the wrong place to post this - but i figured id give a reply. I am currently trying the low fat-low carb and have lost a substantial amount of weight in a relatively short period of time. Also, ill add in that i wasnt very big to begin with 167.5 and at 5'8.5 -thats not overly large,so to lose alot of weight(so far 25lbs) was really great, since, i wasnt "huge"or even "big" by any means. But, if you venture over to the LowCarb diets forum, ((as moochiecat already said))youll probably get a greater number of replies on this topic.Goodluck!

you don't need speed, you need feed

Personally, I don't see how staying trapped in the low fat dieting mentality can help you find permanent weight loss.

A serious part of the healing process is developing patience for your body and allowing it to take all the time it needs to make lasting changes.
If you keep shooting for quick fixes, you will get temporary results.

Have faith - there are many people on this forum who have stuck with Atkins for 1 year, 2 years, 5 years. They have learned the secret to lifelong health, fitness and weight loss. You can too.

        Believe in Dr. Atkins program.
Follow it as it was written.

You need to eat fat to lose fat.
Otherwise you are not doing lo-carb...you are doing hi-protein.
The body won't respond...in fact you will most likely gain fat and lose muscle that way.

Sorry the plan can't be "improved" on.

I am for one, who LOSES more when I UP the fat %. If I eat less that 60%, I stall or fluctuate. Sometimes when I eat 70-75%, it pushes me to my next weightloss - esp if it's been a bit of time since the last loss.

What I'm questioning, if you go low-carb AND low-cal, what would happen once you've lost the weight you want? Your body would be so used to going low-cal, that you'd never be able to eat "normal" amount of cals without gaining - and do you really want to go low-cal, slightly hungry forever? :no I don't think so, because I can pretty much guarantee that you'd more likely to be starting back at Atkins further down the track.

I guess I'm also concerned about what Jilly said about losing a huge amount for a person who doesn't have much to lose the first place. Losing 25lbs IS a lot on someone who was initially nearly 5'9, 167lbs. How will your body recognise that this IS the new weight it should be when it is the body's natural tendency to equalise any major changes to it?
At the same weight I am now, I once lost 10lbs in one month - sure I exercised my butt off, and ate just about only lettuce leaves, but those 5lbs DIDN'T stay off for too long, because I never gave the chance for my body to adjust AND I couldn't eat low-cal forever.

Peter, I have a few questions for you...

The last time you did Atkins, did you only eat enough food to satisfy your hunger or did you eat until you were "stuffed"? Did you adjust your food amounts to match your appetite or did you continue to eat the same amount of food in spite of your appetite? Did you use fitday to track your fats/proteins/carbs ratios?

Alot of people don't realize that 1 tablespoon of mayo can change your fat/protein/carb ratios profoundly.

The other thing that concerns me is exactly how much cheese were you eating? Cheese during Induction is limited to 3-4 ounces, so I'm a bit confused when you wrote you were eating "alot" of cheese. 1 ounce of cheese is approximately a 1 x 1 inch cube.
