  • brussel sprouts question!

ok i bought a box of these frozen at the store, and I have NEVER tried them before! I'm NOT a veggie person, but willing to give them a go...any suggestions for the best ways to prepare them? Do they taste better in a buttery garlic sauce or a cheese sauce? What do they taste like? heh thanks for listening to my stupid questions!

I like them steamed and drenched in butter, with a little salt, pepper and garlic. I've never had frozen though.

You could also thaw them, sautee them in a little butter, garlic, chopped onion, and chopped bacon (I throw the bacon in raw, and sautee everything until the bacon is finished) I've only done this with fresh though.

Can I also recommend you post this in the Food and Cooking Chat forum? Nurselady can give you awsome suggestions there.

Well, I've never bought frozen but with fresh brussel sprouts I cut the stem part off and remove a few of the outer leaves then cut them in half length wise. I heat up some olive oil and butter in a pan, when the pan is nice and hot I put the sprouts in, throw on some kosher salt and pepper and saute them until tender. When they're almost done I put in some diced garlic and mix it all up. When I plate them I grate fresh parmsean (sp?) over the top. I haven't made them any other way but have entertained maybe trying a cheese or white sauce on them. When it comes to taste I think it's a cross between cabbage and broccoli, I'm not sure how else to describe it. I hated them before but after doing this WOL I tried them again on a whim and love them!! In fact, I've got some in the fridge to go with tonight's dinner!

I LOVE brussel sprouts! I keep bags of frozen ones in the freezer at all times. Just put a spoon of butter in there with them and throw them in the microwave - quick and easy and yummy.

I do like them with bacon as well, but I really do prefer to keep my veggies simple without a lot of added stuff.

Frozen veggies make it easy to throw meals together when you may not have planned ahead.

BTW, brussel sprouts will make ya pretty! :yes Come to think of it, my Mom told me that about all of the green veggies I learned to like. ensive
So we Atkineers must be a gorgeous bunch! :yes :joy

OMG I feel so silly...i didnt buy brussel sprouts....I bought Asparagus! LOL shows how much I know about veggies! haha...i ate 4 spears, covered in butter, the first 3 were good but there was somethign funky going on with that last one so i threw it out. Tasted kind of like a mixture of corn and green beans put together lol. I will definitely try it again, I have about 30 spears left. And yes, i know its one of those veggies that needs to be limited to 1 cup a day.

                lol...brussell sprouts & asparagus...

Hey, you know how I like asparagus? I like to just wash them and eat them raw dipped in blue cheese or ranch dressing! Nice and cold, crispy and crunchy..they're sort of like pea pods.

I like to throw them in a hot frying pan with butter and saute them up quickly, then sprinkle with salt and parmesan cheese.

Believe it or not, it's good in scrambled eggs too.

I cannot handle overcooked asparagus though...omg...it's heinous...

..oh..and your pee will smell funny after eating asparagus...lol..it's a fun veggie...

are they supposed to turn out kind of soft and chewy? I may have made a mistake getting frozen ones, but thats really the only practical way i can eat something, since i only get to make a store trip twice a month. yay for new veggerbles!

Some people like them softer, some like them crisper. The fresh stays crisper. The important thing is, did you like it?

Try making an asparagus/bacon frittatta! Pre-cook and crumble the bacon, and then spread it and the chopped asparagus in the bottom of a well-greased casserole pan. Whisk together some eggs and a tiny bit of cream (I use a dozen eggs because I am cooking for my family!) and dump it over the top of the bacon and asparagus. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until it is firm in the center. You can even add cheese if you want.
