  • I'm so confused!!!!!

Okay, I'm reading the book and checking the atkins site and it seems there are a lot of contradictions

no tomatoes, little bit of tomatoes and then the menus have tomatoes in them! urplequ:

No onion, a little onion and then the menus have onions!

No atkins bars during induction and then they are listed in the menus for induction ensive

Don't drink diet stuff but then the sweeteners are listed in the master list and it says you can drink them. :anger

The list says you can eat meats and eggs without counting carbs and then on here I read something about not over 5 eggs a day.

The Atkins bread and other products aren't listed in the master list, but they are listed in the menus in the book and on the site.

Drink 8 eight ounces of water a day and then I see something about add so many ounces of water over that according to the amount of weight you need to loose.

I'm on my third day of low-carb and I'm scared to eat anything! Help me please!!! I'm so confused!!!

What do you eat when it's the middle of the day and you need something but you can't carry your fridge and stove around with you? :help

    I'm so confused :confused

    Hi Tracy

My first question, are you using DANDR, 2002?

    Cheers

      Welcome to Atkins!
Boy you must be a good reader to have found all those things! :nod

There are a few more in there but I don't want to confuse ya.

Little bit of tomato (slice or 2) OK
      same deal with onion

bars work for some people...stall other people...no more than one a day...preferably 1 per week

Sweeteners should be avoided...at least for a couple weeks. You'll find lo-carb food tastes a lot better if you eat nothing sweet for a while.

      eggs=1 carb/egg 5/day sounds reasonable
meat =0 carbs if it's FRESH from the store...not processed/flavored etc

I forget the water formula...just drink LOTS

During the middle of the day eat salad. Is there a fridge you can put a lunch in? Also tuna works.

      Good luck! :icondance

Don't eat anything that isn't on the acceptable food list for Induction.

Ignore everything else, they are just trying to make money.. you can have those special things in moderation after Induction. Especially avoid the bars/candy. Those stall me even off Induction.

Just a little secret: I think anything with sugar alcohols are bad. Even though it's low-carb, it stalls me... and everyone I know. Even a single stick of sugarfree gum has 1 sugar alcohol, still stalls me. Just avoid those.

But you'll be fine if you follow that link!

Yeah, Atkins is all about fresh, wholesome foods. I bring mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese) around with me, you can also make a breadless sandwhich and wrap it in lettuce (beware of lunch meats, read lables), stick some broccoli, summer squash, mushrooms, cauliflower, cucumber, etc in a baggy and munch on it later. I believe SOME jerkey is okay to have in moderation but avoid if possible (read lables). Pork rinds are ok too for a snack but contain high sodium and might make you retain water.

You can also stop by a fast food place. Most will cater to your needs (bunless burgers). Carl's Jr makes a GOOD Low Carb 6 Dollar Burger. Ask for no ketchup on it though!

BTW Tomatoes and onions are on the '1-cup' list so you can have up to a cup of either of those if you have only 2 cups of your 2-cup veggies.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I think the reason for the confusion is because MOST of the people here follow the 2002 DANDR. Since then there has been an edited version put out that changed a lot of the rules. People have found MUCH better results with the 2002 edition from what I've noticed, just because a lot of the items they allow you to have in the new one are things that stall many people.

It's your atkins, so it's your decision on which to use, but I think I'd give the 2002 a shot

confused??? so were all of us when we started. Stick with chapter 11 induction of your DANDR and the rules from chapter 17 but not the menues.

The deal with onions and tomatoes is as you will read in your DANDR that for some folk the natural sugars in them cause blood sugar reactions and insulin levels to go too high interferring with fat burning and craving controls.Same for special catagory foods like cream olives and avacados.

it is different for everybody as unless you have an identical twin and have eatten identical foods all your life there is nobody witht he exact same chemical make up of their body and nobiody who will have the exact same reactions to foods you do. Legal stuff like celery and Splenda give me cravings while they don't effect many mnay folk.

Atkins isn't a rigid eat exactly this so you can experiment with the foods on the foods lists and find what you like and what helps satisfy your hunger and keep you going while staying in your carb limits.

Eggs do have some carbs in them and you do need to count them in your daily under 20 net carbs but you can have how many your body will tolerate. the limits you may see are more for cholesterol and avoiding developing a food allergey as if you constantly eating a protein source your body can decide that protein is a forgein object and you could become alleregic to it. Dr Atkins in DANDR warns about that too.

The biggest thing you need to do is ask before you eat something so you know the ingredients and carb count for it and if it is legal for the Atkins phase you are in. Once you had it it is too late to run to the board and ask about it as the effects are already going on before you ever get a single reply.

                Happy low carbing.

It is confusing - because the book keeps changing and so does the website. I use a version from the 90's. I lost 93 pounds in just over a year by following this version.

In here, they use the 2002 version which contradicts a lot also. The acceptable foods list has changed drastically on the website since I started in 2003. I didn't touch a tomato or onion for a very long time. I would suggest following the 2002 or earlier version and have very little high carb veggies.

I am using the DANDR and the latest copyright date is 2002. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago from a bookstore that keeps the latest versions of books. So I'm asuming it's from 2002? I'm also reading The Atkins Essentials (for induction) and I have refered to the website a few times.

The lists are a little different from one book to the other, but the menus that are listed for induction include things such as Atkins bread, Atkins quickquizine stuff and other low carb stuff along with things we don't ever eat. Who really eats grilled salmon for breakfast? Or Lamb chops with fufu this, that and the other? :raving

But thanks for your input. I guess we (my husband is doing atkins with me) will kinda of make our pathway through these lists and forget the menus. I guess we just have to find our niche.

                      Thank you for the encouragment!

Yeah I ate a lot of stuff that sucked during Induction.
Heck I bought a whole smoked fish to eat for breakfast.
The Atkins zuchinni bread was awful.
It's really a learning process to find out what works and what doesn't.

I wish I had found this place earlier than I did. Thank gd I did!

My best advice is to go along with the program (I did the 1 week menu off the web site but modified a couple dishes) and then start substituting.

If you eat only from teh allowed list you will be fine :hug
Make a copy of it and when you shop dont buy anything not on the list and then make your menus from the food you have bought.
I have been Atkineering for 2 years now and have never bought any of the 'lowcarb' mixes.

8- 8ozs water, plus 8 ozs. of water for every 25 pounds you need to lose.
that was 96 ozs in the beginning of my journey! Now I drink at least 72 oz daily. I crave my water.

                              Thanks you guys! :hug

I wish I craved water. I have to force myself to drink the 8 eight oz. glasses a day. I just don't like water. There are only certain types of bottled water I can handle drinking, thankfully I like walmart water the best (it's cheap). Our tap water is horrible and I've even tried getting a filter for it and it still taste terrible. bleh!

I was proud of myself for downing the whole 64 oz. a day, now I have to drink more? *shiver* I'll drink as much as I can. :sadblinky
