  • Newbie Q about induction & ketosis

Hi everybody! I'm a South Beach convert, doing Atkins for the first time ever, and have some questions. I'm currently in day 5 of induction, and yesterday morning, I could swear I had begun ketosis. My mouth tasted like my tongue was stuck to a flagpole, I had a headache the night before, and flu-like backaches, all of which I knew were telltale signals, so I didn't freak out.

Yesterday was Father's Day, and I'm afraid I overdid it at dinner last night. We ate at a Middle Eastern restaurant, and my entire meal was:

    DRINKS:
1 sip of wine, just to be polite post-toast (it tasted VERY sweet)
    3 8-oz glasses of water

    APPETIZER:
a very generous helping of shepherd's salad (chopped tomato, cucumber, red onion, parsley, feta, olive oil & red wine vinegar)
    2 tbsp roasted eggplant spread
1 bite of roasted red pepper (I tasted that it was marinated in sugar & vinegar and didn't eat anymore)

    MAIN:
2 Spicy Ground Lamb Kebabs (onion, garlic, hot pepper & parsley minced in with the meat)

    DESSERT:
    1 Herbal Peppermint Tea
1 bite of sour cherry babka (dessert bread, only b/c my Grandma made it and would have been hurt if I didn't touch it)

    LATE-NITE SNACK:
1 Atkins Morning Start Apple Crisp bar

I calculate my carbs using the Atkins Carb Counter for Pocket PC application, and it registered that I had eaten 25.6 grams (for the full day). Is this enough to kick me out of ketosis? Once that happens, will it take a full 3 days to get back into ketosis? Is the combination of one sip of sweet wine, one bite of sugary roasted pepper, and one smidgen of cake enough to throw a person out of ketosis, normally?

I appreciate your response, I just want to know what to expect.

    Thanks!
    -Sabrina

PS Also, if someone could explain why each packet of Splenda counts as 1 carb, that would help me too!! Thank you!!

    Hi and welcome.

Here are some links concerning ketosis that might be helpful for you.

Atkins Induction and South Beach Phase 1 are very similar. However Atkins Induction puts limits on the amount of vegetables and the kinds of vegetables. If you stayed within the 3 cup veggie limit (3 cups from the "salad list" or 2 cups "salad list" and 1 cup from the "other list") then you will be okay with that.

The various bites of non-Induction foods aren't recommended during Atkins Induction. Dr. Atkins found that for some folks, that one bite becomes 2 bites, 3 bites, 4 bites, etc.

The Atkins bars and shakes: On ADBB we have found that these products have the tendency to stall or slow weight loss in some folks. So we don't recommend their use during the 14 Day Induction for that reason.

As for kicking you out of ketosis, that depends on your Criticial Carbohydrate Losing Level, which you find during the OWL phase (On-Going Weight Loss phase). That number is very individual. For example, I can eat up to 45 net carbs daily and still lose weight. However, if I eat 46 I stop losing weight. We have one moderator here who can eat over 100 net carbs daily and still lose weight. And we have some people who stop losing if they eat over 20 net carbs. So, it's very individual.

During Induction, you eat below 20 net carbs daily because that's the level of carbohydrates that majority of people will get into ketosis/lipolysis. Again, once you move onto the OWL phase, you can find your individual carb losing level.
