  • Atkins with One Kidney

Is anyone here doing Atkin's with just one kidney?

I ask because...I'm considering talking to my mother about trying Atkin's....however, she gave one of her kidneys to my sister several years ago and now only has one.

With a higher protein diet, how will that affect her kidney? Instead of starting with induction, could she start on a higher carb routine?

And, although my mom has a few extra pounds..the reason why I am thinking of talking to her about it is her high cholesterol....that scares me the most....

My mom is 65 years old, very active, with a few health issues include osteoporosis and high cholesterol.

    Thoughts?

Doing atkins with one kidney is just fine. As long as its in working order. The only dangers come from when people already have kidney problems to begin with.

Going through all the phases of atkins would be better for her, so she can learn how to break away from sugar addictions or any others that could possibly hold her down.

Considering her age and condition she should definately see the doctor first. I imagine she'd be just fine but she probably should have some blood work done to make sure that one kidney is strong enough. And I'm not saying that just because it's Atkins...I'd recommend that for any type of lifestyle change at that age/condition. But those are just my thoughts.

I agree, that she should be checked out by her doctor before starting the program. Get a physical and some blood work, just to make sure.

I concur, it should be up to her doctor to make that decision.

oh yes....she sees her doctor regularly so all of her numbers are up to date...I was just curious if anyone here has just one kidney and doing Atkin's...I would most certainly tell her to ask her doctor about it before actually commencing the program!
