  • Smoked salmon and cream cheese allowed in Phase 1 ?

I read the Food Rules for Induction. 2 foods are a little confusing?

One : It lists salmon under "Meat", does smoked salmon also qualify. Not sure if the additives during the curing process make this acceptable to eat or not?
Second: Cream cheese- also listed as an allowed cheese during induction. I bought the regular Philadelphia one and found it has 1g sugar listed in Ingredients. I took it back and scoured the stores for a Cream Cheese without sugar - does anyone know a brand ?

    Cheers!

Not sure about the salmon, but the 1g for the cream cheese is correct. A good rule of thumb is to count ALL cheese as having 1g per 1oz. I never knew that sugar was on the ingredient list though, so I'm surprised at that. You're buying the regular, full-fat stuff right? Anything "reduced-fat" or "light" will have added sugar, so definitely get the full fat versions of everything! This goes for sour cream, cream, salad dressing, etc.

I think the cream cheese is fine.
The smoked salmon is tricky...I've seen it up to 7 carbs. There are some brands that don't add sugar but they're hard to find. I think Trader Joes might carry some.
Fresh cooked salmon is probably better and it's way easy to cook.
All you need is butter and lemon. What you cook it in is up to you.
Alaskan salmon is the best (taste & nutrition)

Cream cheese is fine. Philadelphia brand cream cheese generally has less carbs than the store brands.

Take Iap's advice and read the packages to the smoked salmon. I've seen smoked salmons with 7 carbs per serving (which was about 1 slice!).

Try making "sandwiches" using cucumber slices or jicama slices---very yummy too.

Jicima is a vegetable. It sorta looks like a big weird shaped potato when it is unpeeled. You peel it and inside it looks like an apple/potato.
They are really good. I eat them plain, but some people put lemon or lime and seasonings. I have used them in slices as taco shells. Weird, but it works. I don't like it cooked so much. But, you can cook it, as well. I am sure there are 100 posts if you search on here or google. I don't have a picture, but they're there.

AS For the salmon, I buy it canned from Price Club or wherever. I think I usually get Bumble Bee. It is good and I eat it with cream cheese- Philly kind, in an omelette.
I don't like smoked salmon, but I eat canned and fresh. Both are good in omelettes

You'll get very good at reading labels on this woe. I have been able to find one brand of smoked salmon that does not contain sugar and it's good! I like making a kind of mock sushi roll thing with smoked salmon. Roll up a spear of avocado and cream cheese with the smoked salmon. Yum.
