  • For the salt-avoiders who sometimes go for fast food ...

I like McDonald's once in a while. In fact, sometimes I crave a nice bunless, no-ketchup Double Quarter Pounder With Cheese, with added mayo. But since I'm a salt-avoider, this is not too often, so I prefer cooking at home or dining out.

Even though I love tuna fish salad, I use the lowest-sodium dill cubes I can find, and get my tuna fish from the health food store. I love mayonnaise with this dish in particular, and plenty of sodium comes from this condiment to satiate me. (By the way, the brand I use is Crown Prince Natural Chunk Light - No Salt Added Tongol Tuna ... only 88mg of sodium for the entire 6.125-ounce can!)

Now, to my point! I'd tried one of McDonald's salads once when they first came out - the Bacon Ranch - and never did again because it was so excessively salty. Well, last week I gave their salads another whirl, but this time, the Grilled Chicken Caesar. I just used extra virgin olive oil at home instead of their dressing, and am happy to report that while there is certainly quite a bit of salt in this salad, it contains over 200mg less than the Bacon Ranch and is thus very tolerable (at least for me!). The Grilled Chicken Caesar tasted fantastic - and what a nice way to get a bit of veggies in when you're on the run. I highly recommend it!

that's awesome shiela! For some reason I can not eat fast food salads...I lovvve homemade salads and restaurant salads (not the little dinky side salads, the GOOD ones) I too try to avoid sodium as much as possible, but i do put a tiny bit of salt in my scrambled eggs, and things of that nature. The one time I tried a fast food burger with no bun, I gained a pound! Then realized it was all from the sodium! 600mgs! So I just make my own burgers now...more meat, and it's cheaper

you can go to the McDonalds website and check the nutritional info for all their foods and check the sodium levels too. they also list ingredients in each item and you can leave out the ones with salt in them when you get yours made if that is an option. Unfortunately the burgers come preseasoned form the meat supplier.

Don't you just hate that? Don't they tout their beef as being "100% pure"? That has always bugged me ...
