  • Moderate ketosis...?

    Hey friends...

    Isn't the new forum great!

I have checked the last 2 days and am in moderate
ketosis (so says the bottle). I am on day 7 of induction
and have been exercizing hard and doing it all BY THE BOOK!

So if I am in ketosis...what exactly does that mean in
layman's terms? Does ketosis guarantee a weight loss?

(I let a friend borrow my book and have another one
    coming from e-bay soon....sorry!) Thanks!

    Re: Moderate ketosis...?

Ketosis does not guarantee a weightloss because you do not know if you are burning dietary fat, stored fat or both. If you eat way too much fat, your body won't need to burn body fat. But most likely you are eating your meals to the point of just being satiated, and that is good, and you are burning both body and dietary fat.

What is your goal weight? I see that you are quite tall. Do you know what size your frame is? Here is a fairly good chart as a guide: http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/primry/life15.htm You may not need to lose a lot more weight.

Being in ketosis is like being pregnant. You either are in it, or you are not. There aren't degrees of ketosis. If the sticks change color, you are in ketosis. The depth of the color merely indicates how hydrated you are at that time. For example, if you hadn't been drinking much water, it would be darker. If you drank 150 fluid oz of water, it would just show "trace".

So congrats on being in ketosis! You will lose.

        Re: Moderate ketosis...?

I also have a question about ketosis.

I have been on Induction for nearly 10 days and havent seen any change in weight or body fat % (I have a scale that measures body fat).
Typically if Im exercising they way I do right now , but on my previous low-fat diet, I would have lost considerably already.

I am in ketosis , but I think an earlier post correctly pointed out, there is no way of knowing whether you are burning body fat or dietary fat. I think I am burning the latter.

Could it be that Im consuming too many calories ? I am actually consuming twice as many calories in total than I did before starting Atkins. Would appreciaet any guidance anyoen can offer....I really want this to work.

          Re: Moderate ketosis...?

First of all, let me reassure you about not having noticed any changes yet. I'm on day 14 (second time around) and felt no changes until yesterday. Then just a loosening of the jeans. (I am deliberately not weighing and probably won't for at least a month, because, having done this before, I KNOW that when in ketosis, I will lose. I will, however, take measurements every 2 weeks.) In induction, some people lose a bunch the first week, nothing or close to nothing the second. Some people lose hardly anything (or nothing) the first week, and a bunch toward the end of week 2. For some, it's spread evenly. So you may be in the second group.

As for calories, in general they don't matter in the first few weeks. However, if you think that may be an issue, let me ask you this: what is your bmr? You should be eating around that number of calories. For example, my bmr is 1694. I tend to eat between 1650 and 1750 calories each day. And believe me, I'm full! (when was the last time Finelly was on a diet and felt full at under 2000 calories? um....NEVER?)

Another thing: are you eating enough fat? Your daily menu should include between 65% and 70% of fat. I tend to lose faster with more than 65% fat in my diet, so I range in the upper 60's, low70's. You may want to play around with your numbers a bit.

Hang in there! This really, really works!

            Re: Moderate ketosis...?

Sonya Parker I saw your other post and you are eating according to that post under 1700 cals a day so doubling your cals isn't the issue as you were in starvation mode before. Give your atkins a chance you are looking at losing only .7-1.4 pounds ofr the entire induction period as you only need to lose 14 pounds. Weight loss isn't a linear thing and it is all relative to the amount you need to lose for you 1.4 pounds will be the same percent of loss as somebody loing 10 pounds that needs to lose 100 pounds. Some folks have more fluid stored with their glycogen reserves but if you were only eating under 900 cals a day you don't have that reserve to geive you any fluid loss during induction. As you buyild up your body chemicals needed for fat burning you will see you will be adding lean body tissues and shedding body fat as you morph your body to a healther smaller one. Check your inches lost as you progress and you will see a change in inches even when you don't see asclae change. Happy low carbing.

              Re: Moderate ketosis...?

              hey sweetie Pie,
I agree with Finelly, either you're in ketosis or you're not!!! The shade of colour doesn't matter, as long as it changes colour, then that's all that matters.

Megs posted an EXCELLENT analogy about ketosis sticks - have a read
              http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...71&postcount=8

I know ketostix doesn't work for everyone, and the batch can easily "go off". You can still be in ketosis even if your sticks don't tell you that.
But for me, they are a godsend and they work wonders for boosting a low morale.

              cheers.

                Re: Moderate ketosis...?

I just measured myself at the two week mark. I really hadn't noticed a change at all during the two weeks but it turns out I lost over 16 inches!!!!!!!

So as usual, my advice is to ignore the scale, and measure, measure, measure! Use Mybodycom.com or another online program to keep track!
