Re: I found this - very interesting read
I don't have time to point out every thing this piece of trash article has wrong...but here are a couple of things that jumped out at me.
Thats a blatant lie....Theres pilesIn fact there does not seem to be a single major governmental or nonprofit medical, nutrition, or science-based organization in the world that supports the Atkins Diet
hmm.. the AMA said that? lolAlthough ketogenic diets have caused a number of "serious potentially-life-threatening complications,"[317] perhaps the greatest danger of the Atkins Diet, according to the American Medical Association, lies in the heart.
The more I read this, the more it seemed to have an agenda....I will have to spend more time when I am not tired to take it apart.n the head-to-head comparisons of the four popular weight-loss diets, Ornish's vegetarian diet was the only one that showed a significant decrease in LDL levels--the so-called "bad" cholesterol.335/265/230

I just am on my second day and a friend told me she was hospitalized from doing Atkins so she sent me this article. I thought I'd share.

Oh and here is something else that bothere me.
First of all..substantial? hardly..thats how you control blood sugar, my limiting its high rises and low drops. Not keeping it constant. After I eat my Blood glucose might rise maybe a few points...What they overlook is that "protein- and fat-rich foods may induce substantial insulin secretion" as well.
Duh, excess protein converts to glucose when in starvation mode...THATS WHY WE TELL PEOPLE TO EAT AND NOT STARVE THEMSELVES![73] Research in which study subjects served as their own controls, for example, has shown that under fasting conditions a quarter pound of beef raises insulin levels in diabetics as much as a quarter pound of straight sugar.335/265/230

[quote]n 2001, the medical journal Obesity Research published "Popular Diets: A Scientific Review." Claiming to have reviewed every study ever done on low carb diets, they concluded, "In all cases, individuals on high-fat, low carbohydrate diets lose weight because they consume fewer calories."[99] Calories count--every time, all the time.DUH@calories count....Its all in how you burn them...."No magic ingredients, strange food combinations or pseudoscientific formulas will alter this metabolic fact."[100]
Not true, loads of studies that show the metabolic effect of ketosis."No magic ingredients, strange food combinations or pseudoscientific formulas will alter this metabolic fact."[100]
THAT IS A BLATANT LIE!Dr. Atkins disagreed. In fact, he accused his critics of having "subnormal intellects" for even holding such a view.
Oh this man shall have a horrible torture in ****.335/265/230

What was she in the hospital for? Not to be rude, but I doubt it was Atkins related.
I am sorry, but people have been eating this way, since the beggining of time! Now all of sudden the AMA says its wrong...and everyone knows they are unbiased. heh.
shoot, how do you think bears stay alive during hibernation?
Explain to me the millions of people who have become happier and healtheir across the country?
explain to me the people on this board! Bowulf,2Big,Ect...
Whats next? an article showing how sugar is actually healthy?335/265/230

Yawn.
It's the same old stuff we've heard about for years.
Carbs will kill you.
Fat will kill you.
Meat will kill you.
blah blah blah.
Atkins is a great way to lose weight...it's been proven as a healthy alternative to lo-fat. They conveniently ignored that fact.
The trick to the whole thing is to maintain the weight loss once you reach goal. You can't use ketosis anymore. You need to eat carbs because most healthy food has carbs. The solution is to start a good exercise program during Induction, stick with it, and keep increasing it until you can maintain your weight loss.
In addition, people who are diabetic or pre-diabetic can almost instantly improve their status by cutting the carbs way down. And how did they get into that state? Overeating carbs. They didn't mention that either.

Kidney problems....too much protein. I guess. I just thought I'd share. The article made a lot of sense when it talks about eating less. I cut down to 1200 calories back in 1997 and exercised and lost a lot of weight in 5 months or so. I decided to try Atkins this time because I keep hearing about how great it is. When I told my friend about it she (and she is young) told me that she was going to send me an article. She told me she passed out one day at work and was rushed to the hospital. I guess they told her that they had treated many other "long term Atkin dieters" for kidney problems and some had kidney failure I guess.

I really need to go to bed or else I am going to have an ulcer...could this guy be anymore ignorant!
This is how you can tell this guys agenda. First of all. That studie I know all about. It was a study done on people who's carbohydrate count was high aswell. I doubt it was the meat that gave the cancer, but all of the refined carbohydrates.Atkins' followers also risk cancer. Studies at Harvard and elsewhere involving tens of thousands of women and men have shown that regular meat consumption may increase colon cancer risk as much as 300 percent. As one Harvard School of Public health researcher noted, because of the meat content, two years on the Atkins Diet "could initiate a cancer.
As for the Harvad guy, not Atkins buddy, but the AMA diet.
I am sorry, but cancer didn't even exist really untill the 20th century, hmm about the same time sugar intake increased?
You mean to tell me that Heart disease and cancer cases increased along with the amount of sugar people are eating was increasing.....odd.335/265/230

I gotta feeling she had pre-related kidney problems.
30% protein rate for a person is hardly high protein....There are millions of people who eat up to 20% more than that on a regular basis.
You are right, same old crap. Maintainence is the perfect way to eat...induction up to it is all about losing.
Its like Dr. atkins said, you gotta counter balance it until its back to normal.335/265/230

I call BS on this:
So does every diet. The real way to prevent diabetes is starvation.Low carb diets like the Atkins diet may also hasten the onset of type II diabetes.
I wonder which diet they like?In the head-to-head comparisons of the four popular weight-loss diets, Ornish's vegetarian diet was the only one that showed a significant decrease in LDL levels--the so-called "bad" cholesterol.
My LDL is so low it's off the chart (seriously)

And there it is...the agendaThe American Academy of Family Physicians notes that high animal protein intake is also largely responsible for the high prevalence of kidney stones in the United States. Kidney stones can cause severe pain, urinary obstruction, and kidney damage. Plant protein does not seem to have a harmful effect.[295] "If we were smart," says Dr. Theodore Steinman, a kidney specialist and senior physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, "we would all be vegetarians335/265/230

Re: I found this - very interesting read
I really do think it's all about regaining self-control rather it's with Atkins or some other eating routine. Atkins to me seems to allow me to stop eating junk food and start to eat healthy again. I think the induction is a way of saying "take time out from eating sugars, refined and processed foods and begin to slowly reintroduce nutrional foods like trim meats, nuts, fruits and veggies."
For me this is definately not about loosing weight, that will be the result as I begin to regain control of my eating habits. I've been so out of control for so long now.
As for the article, don't get too upset. People all have opinions and they all are allowed and should be allowed to voice them. Democracy!!!!

I've heard of this. This is why we harp so much about drinking water.Originally posted by happiermeKidney problems....too much protein. I guess. I just thought I'd share. You need to pee all this weightloss out and help your kidneys. I've heard of people getting kidney pain because Induction will dehydrate you and people don't drink more.
There are a million ways to take the "concepts" of this diet and create a very bad eating plan. I've heard of people eating only steak for every meal. Wrong. You can't eat a pound of hamburger for dinner. You can't eat a pound of cheese a day. You can't eat a dozen eggs a day.
You need those green veggies for sure. You need fiber. You need water
I'm sorry about your friend...I've also heard of tons of people with kidney problems caused by Diabetes which is sometimes caused by....you guessed it....too many carbs.
