    i'm on day 5 of the atkins, i'm not finding it too difficult so far but i've only lost about 2 pounds, i was 189 to start, i want to lose 50-60 pounds. my question is, is it possible to have a high metabolic resistance and be in strong ketosis? because the stick turns the darkest shade of pinky purple. could i be retaining water weight? also my clothes feel loser and my mum has noticed a difference in my figure.

    Ketosis is like being pregnant. You either are, or you are not. The shade of color on the ketostix only would indicate that you are in ketosis and also the level of hydration in your body.

    In other words, you are in ketosis. The fact that it is dark purple may mean you should be drinking more water.

    Don't worry about the scale right now. You are showing the losses where it counts - in how things fit, and how you look. The scale reflects things like water retention, etc. It LIES.

    You can expect to lose between 5 and 10% of the amount you have to lose during the 2 weeks of induction. Some people lose it all in the first week, others all in the second. Some lose it spread out over the two weeks. Several people, including a moderator who has reached goal, lost NOTHING in the first two weeks!

    You sound like you are doing GREAT! Do yourself a favor and take your measurements every two weeks, because the inches are what counts. Go to www.mybodycomp.com for a free account and instructions on setting up your measurements chart.

    One more thing about the scale and how it isn't particularly reliable: last week, one of our regulars posted that she had lost 1/2 lb. And THREE INCHES. Go figure!

      Hi and welcome.

      It takes about 2-3 days for your body to convert from a carb-burning machine to a fat-burning machine. Being on Day 5, you've only had about 3 days of pure "fat burning".

      The ketostix are nice tools but they don't tell you how much weight you will lose or have lost. The only thing they tell you is that you are producing ketones. They won't tell you if those ketones are from the fatty meal you have just eaten or if those ketones are from the fat on your body.

      It's good that you are checking your clothing fit. Loss of inches represents the fat emptying from your cells, according to Dr. Atkins.

      Follow the plan for 14 days then re-evaluate as outlined in the book. It is from your 14 day results that you will be able to see what degree of metabolic resistance you have.

        I'll take 2 pounds in 5 days That and the inches you are losing. Keep up the good work...follow the plan....and drink your water. You'll get there.

          2 pounds in 5 days is good! I lost 8 pounds over the first two weeks, I think I lost the most the 2nd week. Take your measurments! I wish I had when I first started, it comes in really handy in the weeks that the scale doesn't show a loss, you will usually discover you have lost inches! Drink lots of water, you are doing fine!

            oooh one more question, is it normal to sweat a lot? the weather has been hot recently but i'm sweating more than i usually sweat at this temp
