  • Starting over.....anyone experienced this?

I started Atkins on June 24 with 10 lbs to lose. After 2 weeks of induction, I had barely lost 1.5 lbs. I experienced leg cramps, tiredness, exercise fatigue, and worst of all hair thinning. The hair thinning scared me off. I decided to simply quit Atkins. I am now out of ketosis. Another embarrasing sympton of ketosis, really really embarrasing.. very strong smelling urine. Now that Im out of ketosis, its returned to normal. Along with 5 lbs! yes, I gained 5 lbs in 5 days.

What I did wrong was to attempt Extended Induction when I didnt need to. The hair loss would have stopped once I started introducing more carbs slowly up the ladder ( I think!) Furthermore, I should have kept up the exercise (which I slowed down due to fatigue) also could have been remedied with adding more carbs.

As a result, I now weight 5lbs more, am out of ketosis and feel worse than ever. Can someone pls guide me back on track.

My intention is to induce ketosis again and once Im there, go to OWL and proceed from there on. Is it as simple as doing Induction plan for 3-4 days or until I register on the ketostrips, then gonig to OWL. Or do I need to start over the full 14 days of induction?

Yes, Sonya - just follow induction to the letter for a few days then start on the veggie ring of OWL
Maybe drinking extra water might dilute your urine more this time and not make it so smelly?
But look on the bright side - that smell is your proof that you are passing ketones!!

    Edited to add:
Having seen not2late's response I realise that you have been off Atkins for a while, so you will need to do more than just a few days on induction to get your fatburning started properly before you move on to OWL

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

With a 10 pound weight loss goal, 1.5 pounds was excellent. You can expect to lose between 5-10% of the weight you need to lose. So for a person with 10 pounds to lose, that's 1/2 to 1 pound. For a person with 100 pounds to lose that's 5-10 pounds.

Hair thinning is due to a number of things. But if it's stress-related (emotional, dietary, etc.), the thinning doesn't usually occur until 5-6 months after the stressful event.

Anyhow since you went completely off, you'll need to get back into ketosis. You can either spend a week or the full 2 weeks then move into OWL---depends on you. Just remember, though, that you might not get the same results that you did the first time around on Induction.

        Re: Starting over.....anyone experienced this?

I was off the diet for ONLY 3 days.(Tue-Thurs this week) I am back on track today. I intend to do one week (that is all I can take at this point) of strict induction before moving to OWL. That should stabilise my ketosis again, Im hoping.

Thanks guys - Ill keep you posted.

Yes, when i tried atkins about 6 months ago i had your same problem. The hair loss when i washed my hair scared me too and the smelly urine i had too.

I'm restarting tomorrow since i messed up today so i can expect to have those memorable symtoms again hehe

There are several ladies here, including me, who are experiencing the scary hair loss. Mine is still falling out and I can tell you that I'm getting really worried, BUT, I think jumping on and off the bandwagon can make it worse, as you are continually shocking and reshocking your system - which is apparently the reason it falls out to begin with.

              Here's an article about it:

I experienced hairloss last year as well. I changed my shampoo. I used a biotin shampoo from puritan.com. It seemed to help. You can also try biotin supplements - they probably have them at puritan as well.
