People will give you crap about any lifestyle choice you make.
Smoking, drinking, clothes, makeup, shoes, whatever.
If you are different from someone else in any way then you are fair game.
Not a single person alive is totally non-unique. Everyone has something someone else can make fun of.
But that's what it really is: just fun.
If people laugh at me because I don't eat the pizza, I'll remember that the next time their nagging SO keeps calling them on the phone or they spill that pizza on their pants.
Everyone is fallable, no one is perfect. Revel in our imperfections.
My own family laughs at me...why not the rest of the world? 'Cause I'm laughing at them too.

Re: How do you explain you're on atkins? Without too much trouble.

I"ve just had several bad experiences where people wouldn't let it drop, which is why I don't tend to tell people right off the bat. I spent an entire fourth of july being railed at by 3 of my 'friends' about my diet choice, for example. No joke, the entire day - from brunch (where I got the protein breakfast - this started the whole thing) through the fireworks. And I didn't even make any weird demands about where to eat or anything, they just couldn't let it go.

      It can be unpleasant.

On the other hand, it can be fine. Low carb diets came up in the group of people I was with last night - that I had met that night earlier - and two of them had tried it and found that it worked, and they had no problem with me being on a low carb diet.

I find that not using the word 'atkins' helps, oddly enough. Somehow people think that atkins is eating bacon and steaks and no veggies or exercise, whereas 'low carb' just means you're cutting out some carbs. Strange.

Re: How do you explain you're on atkins? Without too much trouble.

I remember when I first started Atkins, I wasn't embarrassed or anything, but people criticized me and gave me negative feedback. It made me uncomfortable. But, I was seeing results and felt great, so I kept doing the program.

Now, I still occassionally get negative remarks when people ask and I tell them I am on Atkins. But, the difference is...I've got 105 pounds behind me and I don't care what they say. I usually just smile and tell them "Isn't it great to live in America where we can all voice our own opinions and make our own decisons?" That usually shuts them up.

I am willing to help and share my WOE with anyone who is serious about losing the weight. But, the ones who are making critical remarks about my WOE are not serious. They are using ATKINS as an excuse. It wouldn't matter if I'd lost the weight using Dr. Phil's program, WW, Jenny Craig or whatever, they'd find fault with it and talk themselves out of doing it. So, I am just thankful that I am doing it and I am 105 pounds lighter.
