  • Did I rob myself?

    Hi all, Im new here..

Im on day 14 today. I think I have decided to stay on induction for atleast another month or more. I have over 100 pounds to lose and it seems from everything I've read that it might benefit me more to stay on induction. I have a few questions though. Any help you all might give me would be appreciated.

I've been eating some low carb yogurt (sugar free). 3g per 4 oz cup. I usually stick one in the freezer for an hour or so before I eat it. You see, I am an icecream fanatic. The first few days I was going nuts not being able to have my icecream after dinner. This has seemed to help me quite a bit, as I havent cheated this whole time. I came here to this board and finally realized that I wasnt supposed to have yogurt during induction. It doesnt seem to have affected me. Im in Ketosis and have lost 11 pounds. Do you think I have robbed myself of better results? Do you think that doing something like this is "okay" to keep you from cheating?

The other question is Soy sauce. I never saw anywhere that it said I couldnt have soy sauce. I've seen on this board that it is not allowed. Why is soy sauce bad?

    Thanks for your help

It's hard to say what would have happened if you had stuck with the foods on the Induction Acceptable Foods list. Yogurt is a food reserved for OWL phase because it contains yeast. If you read through the later chapters of DANDR 2002, you'll see that yeast can adversely affect weight loss in some people. So again, did you rob yourself? You may have or you may not have. Since you don't have anything to compare it to, you'll never know.

As for ice cream----heavy cream is listed twice. It's limited to 2-3 tablespoons daily and it's also listed in the amount of 3 fluid ounces under the "Special Foods Category". You could have easily made a "legal" ice cream with that 3 fluid ounce amount---there are recipes on the board for it.

Some types of soy sauce is made by fermenting soybeans with wheat. Again, folks with wheat sensitivities or soy sensitivities can be adversely affected by these products. I'm in the OWL phase and I can't eat some wheat products because it causes my asthma to flare up---something I didn't know when I was a low fat vegetarian.

By the way, I get the feeling that you haven't really read the Induction Acceptable Foods List nor have you read through the Rules of Induction. See, if you did read the List then you would have known that there are only 3 dairy products allowed during Induction: cheese, cream and butter. If you want to do Atkins (or any other diet) properly and effectively, I really recommend that you do. We get too many people around here who haven't and falsely believe Atkins is just about eating meat/cheese/eggs and staying under 20 net carbs daily.

      welcome to the board.
Yep as Megs daid you seem to have not read the rules for doing Atkins as discussed in chapter 11 of Dr Atkins book. zFollowing the rules and understanding why helps make it easier to follow not harder.

Since you need your yogurt to get through it would appear you still have a sweet tooth controlling you and not you controlling your foods. Break your addiction and see if you can do the next week of your longer induction legal. If you find you can't then you should move on to OWL and get to rung two the fresh dairy one. You can stop climbing at that point until you lose more of your needed weight or you decide as the questionaire in chapter 13 points out you want more food choices.

The bacteria in the yogurt are very healthy but the lactose and its by-products in the yogurt is sugar and can effect your blood sugar stabilization and your fat burning.

      Happy low carbing.

I did read the list. But, I think I also went under that assumption that no carbs = good for me. I really didnt realize that the list was so concrete. I have since read the book as well. I think im on the right track now and I wont be buying any more of that yogurt.

It really wasnt until my second week that I found this board and realized that I was looking at Atkins the wrong way.

The carbs we get from veggies are really important. Not to mention the fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals we get from them.

The list is concrete---In fact the diet is pretty concrete since one of the Rules of Induction is to "eat nothing that isn't on the acceptable foods list". But at the same time, the list is very generous in terms of food choices. This is where people mess up---they focus on one or two foods on the list and forget the rest of the foods.
