  • Starting Induction tomorrow had a few ???

Hi my name is Lorraine. I tried doing atkins before but found out i wasn't doing induction correctly. Now that I reread the book the mistakes i made i can correct but still have a few questions on some things if someone can help me.
First off on the cheese that is allowed is that just block solid cheeses or is American singles slices allowed??
Also a person can stay on induction till almost all weight comes off? That means staying at the below 20 carbs a day? So when most of weight off THEN they do OWL???
Thanks in advance for any replies...

    Welcome to ADBB!

Pretty much any cheese is fine except for "fresh" cheese, "lo-fat" cheese, or some really salty kinds.
OWL stands for Ongoing Weight Loss and you are actually supposed to lose most of your weight there. Some people stay on Extended Induction because they have a lot to lose but when you're within 50 lbs of your goal you should move to OWL.
Maybe once you hit your 189 goal move to OWL.
I moved to OWL after 4 weeks and then lost the rest over 6 more months.

      Hi Lorraine,

I am new here, but will add what I can.

If you look closely at the lables of on most american cheese singles, they are not cheese at all, but rather "cheese food" or "cheese spread" (velveta). These are made with cheese, water, hydogenated oils and other gunk. If you want american cheese, Kraft does make it, but read your labels. So, American singles are out unless you read carefully. True "American" cheese is a form of cheddar and therefore acceptable in induction. When I want a slice of american, even before starting atkins, I go to the deli and get the white, sliced, american cheese. The only difference between the white and the orange cheese is annatto coloring. It is added to a lot of american made cheeses like cheddar. It is plant derived and completely harmless, but also adds no flavor.

About staying on induction, there is a lot about that in the book and in the FAQ of extended induction portion of ths forum.

Re: Starting Induction tomorrow had a few ???

        Welcome Lorraine
Just keep the questions coming - a lot of us ask the same questions over and over again, but someone usually answers and the rest of us get a refresher/reminder on Atkins knowledge.

You've got some great advice on cheeses so far, and as Iap suggests, perhaps move onto OWL soon?
DANDR does recommend moving to Pre-Maintenance when you are within 5-10lbs of goal weight, which means... you need the time & pounds in between to spend for OWL. It is considered one of the most difficult BUT most exciting of all Atkins phases because we get to find out what foods work for us AND still able to lose the weight we want to.

If you try and stay below 20g until nearly all your weight comes off, then you may be opening yourself up to lots of cheats, stuff-ups, stalls, and food boredom. Most of all, if you leave OWL till too late, then you won't have enough time to learn how different foods affect you personally and you could increase the chance of putting the weight back on...

Well, hopefully you can take some of what we say away with you and you will enjoy the Atkins WOE
