  • Noobie in Dublin, Ireland

    Hi Folks,

Having gone back to college at night for the last few years I had put on about 50lbs and was none too happy about it. I have always been athletic and well built but what was looking at me in the mirror was stocky and overweight. So I decided that I was going to shed the extra weight starting in June.

So I started working out on a regular basis again and eating 'sensibly' and had managed to drop 14lb. After a spinning class last Friday I was talking to one of the lads that had done the class with me and he told me that he had shed and kept off 80lbs over the last year with Atkins and he suggetsed I read the book. I bought and read the book the following day and had a carb blowout that night and started my induction on Sunday - so I'm on Day 3 today.

    I'm male, 5'10" with a muscular build
At the start of June I weighed in at 245lb.
Starting Induction on Sun July 17th I weighed 231lb.
My goal is to weigh 196lb on September 17th - (My sis's wedding when I will meet a lot of relatives that have seen my pile on the lb's over the last few years)

I plan to update this tread with my progress and would appreciate any help, advice or support from anybody here.

    Thanks - Alan.

p.s. I hadn't realised how addicted I was to carbs until I cut them out - yesterday was very tough.

The first few weeks are the most difficult, but just keep reminding yourself that once you're through them, you'll be fine and back to feeling your regular self.
The best thing you can do is read read read....keep your copy of DANDR close by and refer to it often...read the sticky's in the forums and remember that they were written up by members of this board because the majority of us needed the information and have all gone through the same thing.
If you are a goal setter, then you may want to visit the Challenges forum.

And be patient. Remember that the tape measure may show you more progress than your scale, and understand that sometimes your body will pause between weight losses.

Welcome, and all the best to you!

          Hi Dubguy,

Welcome! It sounds like you are off to a great start! I agree with Moochiecat, I wish I had taken my measurements that first week, I didn't do it for awhile so I don't know how many inches I've lost altogether. Good luck!

              Thanks for the feedback folks.
I did the tape meausre thing on Sun 17th - so will be keeping an eye on that too.

Had a really good session in the gym last night with a 45min spinning class followed by some weight training and wrapped up with a pilates class to stretch me out.

Felt good this morning - but did have problems getting to sleep last night.

              Hopped on the scales ( I know I should wait .... ) and was 226lb - That's 5lb since Sunday !!

              Today's Menu:
              Breakfast
2 pieces of grilled bacon, 2 scrambled eggs, 1 small grilled tomato
              Lunch
Smoked Salmon Strips in Mayo , Salad ( Lettuce, cucumber & small tomato) & cheese
              Dinner
Breast of Chicken, Small Salad with mayo & chesse

Will be doing jiujitsu tonight for 1 hour

                  Hey Dubguy!

Great job so far, keep it up! I keep asking myself the same question, why didn't I do this sooner?? This is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I really don't miss carbs all that much...although I have a weakness for desserts. IF you ever cheat, you will probably quickly realize how bad you felt when you were carb-loading your body! I almost get physically sick now when I have too many carbs.

Anyway...good job, keep it up, and let us know if there's anything you want to know!!

Hi Folks - One week in ( On Sunday ) I was down 7lb and lost 2.5 inches.

Hopped on the scales this morning and was 221lb. That's the first time I've been under 16st in a loooong time. I have settled into the induction menu now and am considering extending my induction phase. - Your thoughts people ??

                      Great job man!

It's up to you about the extended induction thing. I stayed on induction for about 6 months. Even after I started adding in the foods according to the OWL steps, I maintained around 20g carbs. I think they call that modified OWL. I found that I continued to lose faster staying on induction, but if you get bored with the foods or get stuck in a rut, you might want to move on to OWL.

                          Hi Folks.

Well today is 4 weeks since I started on this journey and I have to admit I'm on a bit of a high. I weighed in at 217lb and my total lost inches is 13".

I am so happy with how things are progressing, I have a pic of me on Day1 and I think the pic of me today shows a marked improvement. I may even post the pics to see what you guys think !!

I am full of energy and self confidence is returning.

Hi Dub Guy, I am fairly new to this too. Started 2 and a half weeks ago, lost 4lb very quickly but have stalled since then and am getting frustrated. Found out through here that it was probably the sugar free sweets that have stalled me, so am "withdrawing" from them today - yes - that sounds very OTT but I really am "withdrawing". I could kill for one of the little buggers right now!!! They replaced cigarettes for me, so I guess that is why I am so dependent.

Anyway, good luck. All I can say at this point is that this forum is great for support and advice. Sharon xx
