  • Made a mistake with salad

Can't believe how i read and reread DANDR and i still made a mistake with the salad. All this time i THOUGHT you were allowed 3 cups of LETTUCE AND a cup of other veggies as in cucumbers, mushrooms, etc to make one cup. It's 3 cups TOTAL that your whole salad can be! Talk about STUPID
    So i try again tomorrow....

Listen, absolutely don't beat yourself up over an extra cup of lettuce. You can beat your self up over chips, over cookies, over chocolate chip ice cream, but NOT and I repeat NOT over lettuce. I will make you a bet that if you plug your days menu into fitday you will still not have gotten over your carb allowance for the day.
Your doin' good Lorraine. Keep it up.

        I think you'll be fine.
It's just food after all...you didn't just swallow a bottle of pills.

I get upset if I forget to buy a key ingredient of something I'm cooking. It's not an exact science.

Actually it's 3 cups of veg for the entire day. That veg can be divided into 2 cups from the veg on the "Salad" list + 1 cup of the veg on the "Other" list. OR 3 cups from the veg on the "Salad" list.

Also, you might want to review the veggie lists because I get the feeling from what you've written you're thinking that lettuce is the only veggie on that "salad" list.

No one ever got fat overeating lettuce. Not to worry.

Re: Made a mistake with salad

Hi all. I'm brand new here, and on day 2 of induction. I found this board while looking for clarification of some conflicting info on this very point. I have a page which I printed from the Atkins site entitled, "Ten Easy Steps To Induction". Step #3 states, "...You should eat at least four cups of salad vegetables, or three cups of salad vegetables plus one cup of other vegetables". Sooo, is it actually the 3 cups total which is correct?

                  Thanks!

It depends on which version you read or which Atkins counselor you talked to and when, irysh.

As I wrote in another thread, when I called the Atkins Center (back in the day when Dr. Atkins ran the joint still. LOL) just over 2 1/2 years ago and asked them this question they told me that the reason Dr. Atkins put in the "cup" rule was because most people vastly underestimate the amounts they're really eating and/or don't have a scale to measure, so the "cups" rule kept them in check and they could about guarantee a newbie would stay under 20 grams of carb that way.

Personally, I always advocate for staying between 15-20 grams of carb during induction, and if you choose the right veggies, that can be a heckuva lot more than a lousy three cups

Just adding to what Brook wrote...

There are alot more veggies on the "salad" list than lettuce. In fact, many of my salads don't contain lettuce at all.

Atkins Nutritional Inc. has forgotten this factoid too. See, there are a couple of veggies on that "salad" list that have 5 or nearly 5 net carbs per 1 cup. So if you eat 4 cups of these veggies, you'll be eating 20 net carbs from the veggies alone. Nothing wrong with that IF you don't eat anything else with carbs, like eggs (0.6 net carbs per 1 USDA large egg), cheese (0.1-1 net carb depending on the cheese), cream (0.4-0.6 net carbs per tablespoon), splenda (0.9 net carbs per packet), coffee or tea (0.8-1 net carb per 6 or 8 fluid ounce serving), etc.

                      Editing to add..

The other thing about the 3 cup limit is portion control. Many of us are overweight because we overeat. Learning "normal" sized portions is a part of learning how to eat "normally". In regards to salad, a typical restaurant green salad contains 4-6 cups of veg. The recommended daily serving of vegetables is 3-5 servings. A serving is defined as 1 cup of raw or 1/2 cup of cooked vegetable.

So that 3 cup daily limit is well within the recommended daily servings.
