  • Ketosis breath??

I did a quick search before posting this thread and althrough several threads came up, no "titles" or "subjects" jumped out.

Is it normal to have a "funny" taste in your mouth almost ALL the time if you are in ketosis? I thought I remembered reading about it somewhere, but I can't find it. Sometimes it doesn't bother me, other times it's really gross. I would almost swear it's at its worst when my veggie intake is low.

    Anybody??

    HELP!!!

    Re: Ketosis breath??

    hi.

Check the FAQ section for "The Physical Signs of Ketosis".

"Ketone breath" is classically described as a sweet smell, like the smell of very ripe apples. And I've smelt ketone breath in the diabetics in ketoacidosis and it is a sweet odor, similiar to very ripe apples.

The bad, foul breath some low carbers get I think is a mix of several factors: 1. the ketones, 2. poor hygiene, 3. lack of water, 4. lack of chlorophyll in the diet and did I mention poor hygiene? I also think part if it is due to the amnonia compounds that are formed when we metabolize protein. Some Atkineers go hog-wild eating all the steaks, bacon, egg, cheese, etc. they can, because they mistakenly believe Atkins is a high protein diet.

But you are correct: it is worse when your veggies are low because veggies, especially the green veggies contain chlorophyll with acts as an odor absorber. Since the leafy green veggies are low in carbs (generally containing less than 5% carbs), you should worry too much about eating them.

Yeah.....<sigh> My dh says it doesn't smell bad, despite the weird taste in my mouth. I drink a ton of water and that "dilutes" the taste. But it's pretty much all the time when in ketosis.
