  • What is a stone?

    I keep hearing people use the word but I have absolutely no idea what it means..thanks for the enlightenment!!

    Different countries use different metric systems.

    1 Stone = 14 lbs I believe

      yup 1 stone = 14 pounds, its a britsh measuring term, used only for body weight, for example you don't go and ask for a stone of beef.

            True...a stone is 14 pounds....but we do use it for other things other than body weight. A stone of potatoes (not on induction ...or Atkins full stop) is a common product measure in most UK supermarkets. A stone is an old imperial measure still widley used over this side of the pond

                I've always wondered why 14? Doesn't that make quick conversion harder or do you just memorize it like the multiplication tables?

                  We dont convert it usually!!
                  We might say we weigh 11 and a half stone or 11 stone 7 pounds and most Brits would know what we mean.
                  Though nowadays many people would use the kilogramme readout - most scales can show either stones/pounds and kilos as you choose.
