  • Determining ideal weight via Body Mass Index?

Has anyone done the math on their BMI to see what they SHOULD weigh?

I did the math last night and it says I should weigh 165. The ideal BMI is 22.5 and mine right now is 25.x . I weigh 192 right now.

This means I have 27 lbs to loose! I've never been that light in my entire life. The lightest I've ever been is 179!

    Seems a bit frightening actually!

I guess I could just stay on atkins until I feel comfortable.

thanks for the link.. but it says underweight is less than 20.. that doesn't make sense to me.. since I don't think I'm underweight..is that right?

BMI is an estimate. It doesn't take muscle mass into consideration at all. For example, some professional athletes are "obese" according to the BMI scale.

Use the BMI as an approximation or as a range of weights to shoot for. When I started this diet, I decided that when I would get about 20 pounds from the upper limit weight of my BMI range ("normal body weight" is between 18-25), I would stop and re-evaluate my weight loss goal. I'm now going to re-evaluate that final goal when I within 2 dress sizes of my goal dress size, instead.

Heres my take on the whole fish.

I see alot of people asking the question, "how much should I weigh, I am this tall", or "people who are this much what do you look like".

I say judge your weight loss by your Lean body mass and fat percent. I have a goal of 15%bF by the end of the year. That is a Healthy Normal percent. Yet with LMB taken into consideration, I could weigh between 180-230.

See the huge difference? Thats why I have two cycles of training. Cutting Fat and then gaining muscle. Right now I am cutting the fat off, even though its considered a long cycle compared to most, my strength training is limited to 2-3days weekly..the next cycle will be a complete endurance and strength training...but I will let the Military take care of that.

My personal ultamite goal will be 6FT Tall, 230-240lbs,10-12% body fat. Of course thats alot of Muscle...I am not going for the pumped body building look..just the muscular strong man! lol...I want to be able to do pull ups with 100lbs hanging off my belt! Now that will be a sight lol!

So in conclusion, its all boils down to one thing...

the BMI index chart should tell you that if you are well muscled it isn't accurate as we all remember when it was first pulished and some journalist pointed out that a very muscular NBA star was obese by it.

go with your lean body mass % and you will be fine.
