  • Calorie question

I know, I know, we're not supposed to count them. But I just completed my FitDay Food entry for today and I'm a bit shocked -- 2522 cals, which seems huge.

This is what I ate today:

    B'Fast:

    4 thin rashers bacon
2 egg omelette cooked in small pat butter

    Lunch:
Tuna, home-made mayo, half a tomato, 1/4 cup cucumber, 1.5 cup lettuce

    Snack:
    1 small slice Brie
4 thin pieces of salami with 2 spoons cream cheese

    Dinner:
1 steak cooked in butter with crushed peppercorns and 1 spoonful cream

    1 cup of lettuce

This comes to 64% fat, 34% protein, 2% carbs, which sounds pretty much okay. Have I made a mistake, or should I just do as the good Dr says and not get hung up on cals?

Very very grateful for any advice/reassurance. I'm loving this diet, and losing on it, but I want to make sure I've read it all right.

Oh, and I walked for an hour.

    Thanks

    Re: Calorie question

Don't be too concerned about calories at this point in the diet. A very rough way to estimate your daily calories is to add a 2 to your weight in pounds. In other words, I weigh 178 pounds. So a rough estimate of my daily calories is 1780.

Once ketosis sets in, your appetite will diminish. Eat only the amount that satisfies your hunger as Dr. Atkins advises and you'll do fine.

      Re: Calorie question

I second what 2big said about not worrying about calories at this stage.

But I was surprised to see that the food you listed amounted to as many calories. Maybe you could post a link to your fitday account so someone could see if you have entered a quantity incorrectly - like 1 cup of mayo instead of one tablespoon, or one cup of eggs instead of one egg.

I noticed most of your veggies was lettuce - is that iceberg or one of the more nutricious darker lettuces available ? Iceberg is virtually just 'chewy water' with very few nutrients.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

I also agree about not counting the calories, but check your BMR/AMR and come somewhere between the two...it also doesn't seem that based on what you ate you could be anywhere near 2500 calories. Are you sure you're entering it right in fitday?

          Re: Calorie question

Thank you both for your replies.

Elizellen -- it does seem an awful lot, doesn't it? I'd love you to have a look, but I don't know how to enable you to access my FitDay acct, and I can't find the info on the Fitday website. Am I being blind?

No, not iceberg. Lamb's lettuce and others.

Thanks so much for your help!

                  Re: Calorie question

Well, you entered the food right I think. I dind't know two cans of tuna had so much calories. Anyway, I wouldn't sweat it. It looks like your AMR is around 2600 calories, right? Plus, looking back through your journal it looks like you typically eat much less....probably not enough actually. I was the same way where I would typically not eat more than 1800 calories in a day (not intentionally), but then each time I'd go and have like 2100 calories or something I'd get a whooshie.

So I think the message here is do as the Doc says and don't be too concerned with calories at this stage and eat until you are satisfied. Don't overdo it, and you should be fine! Also, CONGRATS on the 7lbs so far!!

Oh wait, I am goin to yell at you for a sec... LOL!! Where's your exercise?!? LOL

                    Re: Calorie question

Wow, I really like the idea of being told to eat *more* At the moment I'm eating until I'm full, and I have to say I don't ever feel hungry... But I'm sure I could nibble on some more cheese if that helped.

Sorry for the stupid question, but what is my AMR and how do I work it out? It's ringing a distant bell but my book is at home and I'm at work, so I can't look it up until tonight.

Thanks so much for all your help.

                    Oh, and you're looking GREAT.

                      Re: Calorie question

                      Hey thanks!

BMR is your basal metabolic rate and AMr is your active metabolic rate...or something like that... The basal rate should be next to the basal label in your calories burned and the AMR might be the value of the lifestyle label added to your basal. Someone else could probably get you a better way to figure it out. There are websites which will calculate it for you.

If anyone has better info, please add it as I'm not the biggest expert in this area! LOL
