  • Atkins-friendly antacid?

I've had really bad indigestion today. Not sure whats causing it as I haven't introduced anything new into my diet and I'm having about the same amount of stress.

Can anyone recommend a good antacid? They all seem to have starch/sugar.

All I could find is rolaids...

550mg of Calcium carbonate and 110mg of magnesium hydroxizide.

The inactive ingredients are dextrose, magnesium stearate, polyethhylene, starch, glycol, and sucrose.

So all the *ose entries are sugar.

What I'll do is just count each tablet as if I was having 1g of sugar. That way I'll be WELL under my daily amount.

Will that work? Has anyone else used this technique?

I had a bad problem with this during the first week. I found an antacid at Walmart called Titralac Plus. It comes in a small white bottle w/ a yellow lid. It's flavored with saccharin and spearmint oil. I think it was around $6 for 100 tablets. Hope this helps!

Wouldn't just baking soda in water work?

              Re: Atkins-friendly antacid?

Obviously, you are having a problem with some food or combination of foods you are eating that are not being digested fully in your stomach - meaning, you are not secreating enough stomach acids at the time of digestion, thereby causing the problem of acid indigestion/reflux, etc. The "acid" is actually gases produced buy the stomach when it can't properly digest something, and those gases travel up to the esophagus and cause discomfort, burning, etc. Instead of buying antacids, try organic apple cider vinegar, or plain vinegar, if that's all you have - about a tablespoon in 4 ounces or so of water, to start with. Drink it down after you eat (yes, that might be a challenge because some can't tollerate swallowing something so strong, you may feel a "buring" sensation as it is going down) and see if the discomfort stops - I bet it will. I hear it is a great remedy for acid indigestion/reflux. You see, the vinegar is a strong acid and since you are lacking a bit in digestive acids when you eat, this boost of acid you drink will aid in digesting the contents of your stomach. The way antacids work is by neutralize all the acid in you stomach, causing the stomach contents to become alkaline. You cannot digest food with an alkaline consentration, so an emergency message is sent to the brain to completely flush and bombard the stomach with lots of acid. This increase in stomch acid counteracts the alkalinity of the stomach which then allows all the food in your stomach to be digested properly - thus you then have relief from acid indigestion. I know, it sounds complicated, but it really isn't. I consume apple cider vinegar every day in the olive oil and apple cider vinegar dressing that I make and never have a problem anymore with digestion problems. I recommend organic apple cider vinegar (with the mother in it) because of the nutritional benefits - it is not in any way processed, and it contains large amounts of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. The enzymes, in particular, help tremendously with digetsion <img>

I would just take a couple of Tagamet or Zantac for a day or two. It will cause your body to produce less stomach acid and take care of the problem.
