    Oops

    Sayonara Atkins Bars!!

Maybe if they catered to their LOYAL ATKINS DIETERS BASE instead of making junk that we don't really want/need they would have been OK.

I was just thinking about this today when I passed the dwindling Atkins section of the market, "how are they staying in business?"

The fact is that we don't need frankenfoods to do this diet so it doesn't surprise me to hear about this. The best way to have success on Atkins is to focus on real unprocessed, or minimally processed foods as Dr. Atkins originally intended, so I for one, am not sad to see the products go.

Well.. I'd still love to see some type of Atkins friendly "fast" products.

Not frankenfoods mind you just good, decent products you can eat quickly.

Maybe some type of egg protein chocolate bar ...

But yes.. you're right. There's no market here.

It's really too bad the clinic didn't stay open. Whatever the company did, they should have worked more on marketing the program itself instead of concentrating solely on pushing out as many products as possible.

well actually (IMO) it's those processed foods that make this diet fail. the diet worked better, for many more people, when those processed low carb foods didn't exist (eg. low carb ice cream).

The clinic didn't stay open because Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. didn't want it to stay open. One of Atkins' colleagues put a bid to buy the clinic part, but the negotiations fell through and all the patients and staff were given a 2 week notice to find other physicians and jobs. See, medical clinics don't make alot of money. In fact, they barely break even.

Anyhow, as Moochie and Iap have said---it doesn't surprize me one bit. You don't need those low carb food replacements to do this diet effectively and properly. Dr. Atkins wanted us to eat whole, natural, minimally processed foods because according to his writings in the 1970s and early 1980s, he believed that the over processing and overrefinement of our foods were partly to blame for many of our health issues, which is why (imo) "meal replacement" shakes and bars contradict that basic Atkins idea. And the more recent Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. publications always pushed those low carb replacements. Look at the sample Induction menu on their site----at least one or two of their products are a part of the daily menu, giving the casual reader the impression "Oh no! If I don't have X, Y, Z, I can't do this diet." Really sad, imo.

The other thing I find dangerous about these low carb replacements is that folks do the diet bargaining thing. You see it in the OWL forum sometimes where folks think if they can eat 30 net carbs daily, then if they eat their Induction menu, they can spend the remaining 10 net carbs on 10 net carbs worth of low carb ice cream or low carb chocolate bars, etc. So in this case it only perpetuates some of the bad eating habits that made us fat in the first place....

The only Atkins product that was a success was the 2002 edition of DANDR.

I'm curious as to what will happen to www.atkins.com
I think I'll go there and print out some of their recipes just in case it disappears off the face of the earth.

Re: Atkins Nutritionals files for chapter 11

I was at the grocery store yesterday and noticed a bottle of Atkins syrup. The bottle was dusty but I wanted to read the ingredients. I noticed that the sell date was June of 2005. The writing was on the wall. I had looked at the bars a couple times out of curiosity and thought, If I don't like regular energy bars, I won't like these.
