  • Day Eight and Still Feeling Weird

Hi all... I'm hoping you can help me with this one... Been on induction for 8 days now- doing good- eating all the right foods- but here are my questions::

    1) I feel kind of lightheaded most of the time.. not really like pass out lightheaded but more like i've had too many margaritas lightheaded. sometimes things look like they move in slow motion... didn't start until i started induction- any thoughts.

    2) I am having muscle cramps like the dickens.. my legs jerk in my sleep, my shoulder and arm feel crampy. Just feel like dookey doo.. any thoughts?

    3) OMG, has the heartburn been killer. Today especially- I have not been hungry and have only have had a small packet of tuna and I had to make myself eat that... The first 4-5 days no heartburn but now it's crazy. any thoughts?

    4) TOM in 5 days.... ugh!!! I've felt a little panicky-- had panic attacks a few years ago but those have long resolved... but now their back- not as bad but still back.. any thought?

when is atkins not right for someone-- my doctor has put my husband and myself on this and i am trying very hard but i'm not sure how much longer i can deal with this spacey, achey, panicky feeling... any comments, suggestions or just plain ole supprt would be appreciated....

Are you taking any supplements? I used a calcium/magnesium/potassium combo for the leg cramps. Those were killer in the beginning.
    Drinking enough water?
I didn't have heartburn problems and had panick attacks bad before, but have been off meds for that for quite a while since starting this WOE.
Good luck to you. Sorry I am not more help!

I agree with Barb on the supplements. Make sure you're taking a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, plus a good calcium supplement (I use Citracal Plus), Essential Fatty Acids (fish and/or flaxseed oil), and make sure you're getting enough potassium. A good way to get that in your diet is to switch to Morton's Lite Salt - it's half the sodium of regular salt and the other half is potassium. That will help with your muscle cramps.

As to the light-headed feeling, it could be your blood pressure dropping. I have low blood pressure already, but two weeks into Induction, my trainer took my BP and it was lowest I've ever known it to be - 70/54! The dizziness should taper off - if not, you might want to see a doctor.

TOM has a lot of fun with the Ladies of Atkins - if you join the Womens Forum, you'll see he and his shenanigans get posted about a lot!

      Good luck!

Im not real sure where and I could look, but I do know that Dr. Atkins talked about these symptoms in the book and had given suggestions on what you can do to help them. Let me know if youd like me to look for you. I know it was somewhere towards the front.

          Lightheadedness:
          1. Are you eating enough? Your blood sugar may be dropping.
          2. Near Tom? Your iron might be low - be sure to take supplements.
          3. Drinking enough fluids? You could be dehydrated.

Heartburn - no clue, maybe the tuna?

Leg cramps - Potassium, as stated above, is supposed to help in alleviating those.

Thanks for all the info gang...

I re read some of the section of DANRD about side effects.. I guess I was just concerned that I had been feeling that way for too long... but hey I was a heavy sugar/carb abuser so maybe withdrawal took a little longer..

Today was the first day that I didn't feel as bad.. So I think it is starting to resolve.. Just to be on the safe side I called my doctor and she said that the symptoms were pretty much par for the course.. She did all my blood work before we (DH & I) started and that was all very normal.. chol: 153, normal blood glucose, thyroid good.. But it was good to get her input-- she also said PLUS being close to TOM might aggravate some symptoms, especially since I'm perimenopausal at the ripe ole age of 36.... runs in the family... oh well!!

Glad you are starting to feel better. There is a sticky in the Second Time Around Forum that discusses the induction flu. It may be worthwhile for you to check this out.

I felt awful for almost 14 full days. Then it's like a light-switch...at day 15 I really did feel normal!

Re: Day Eight and Still Feeling Weird

I was on induction for a long time (the first time..LOL) and I had induction flu it seemed like forever!

Light headedness: You need to eat more. Snack on some meat or hard-boiled/deviled eggs. Are you getting all your veggies? Make sure you're drinking LOTS of water!

Leg cramps: What the others have said.

Panic attacks: Maybe you're thinking about this as a diet instead of a way of life? Relax, if you're doing it right, the weight will come off.

TOM: Can't help you there. I'm neutered.. LOL

Trust your doctor if she recommended this. I wish all doctors did! You will be fine. If you do have other concerns, don't hesitate to ask us!
