  • Does anyone else have this problem?

    Hey everyone

I'm on day four, and so far I'm doing well...except for one thing.
I find it really hard to swallow my food when I do this WOE which has caused me to stop a few times (no I'm not giving up this time)... sometimes I get to the point of gagging on it...gross I know, but it's really a problem that I have a hard time dealing with.

Sometimes I when I have an appetite I don't even look forward to eating because I just hate that feeling.

I have tried eating smaller meals, and taking sips of water in between bites which is helping I guess...it's not so bad now as when I eat larger meals. I think it's so stupid, because I could easily down a can of pringles now, and it wouldn't be a problem...so I know it must be all in my head. Any psychologist out there who can help me? haha

This morning I had some homemade crab salad on a bed of lettuce, and I LOVE crab...and I could barely swallow it. It's so annoying.

Does anyone else have this problem? If so what do you do?

Have you gone to your doctor to make sure you don't have any physical reasons for not being able to swallow food while on this diet? Also, when you aren't on Atkins or any other weight loss diet, do you have problems swallowing food?

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi jd. This probably won't be much help, but I did have this problem for 3 or 4 days during my second week. I couldn't eat anything without feeling like that. I ended up eating little bits at a time, and stopping frequently till that reflex settled down. I have absolutely no idea what the cause was. I thought the first time it was because the broccoli in my quiche was just too cooked for my taste, but it continued for several more days. The only helpful thing I can tell you is that it did pass.

I am wondering if you had problems with this eating before you started this Woe aswell?

I never have this problem unless I do Atkins...and it does go away eventually...The first time I ever did this WOE I didn't really have it but for 1 day. Maybe it's induction flu or something. But like I said, it's probably all just in my head. I ate teeny tiny bites at dinner and did fine.

I get like that with mushy food, maybe that's what it is? not a lot of crunch on atkins. Maybe try buying things like cucumbers and jicama to add some crunch to your day?

Maybe you're just not used to eating this way. It's obvious that your body is not liking the foods you have to consume

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

The first week, on day 4, I was so sick. Could not even put food to my mouth without gagging. The second week around day 11 I had the same problem. It always seems to past though. I think it is just your bodies way of reacting to the different food you are eating. My fiancee who is doing atkins with me, cheated and had some McDonalds fries (his all time favorite fast food fry), and for once in his life, he couldn't stand the taste.

I believe that being on Atkins, you are teaching your body to eat healthy and it rejects the healthy food, but it will settle down eventually. At least I am hoping I don't have any more days of that sick, nausous feeling.

                Good luck!

It might help to think about what you are really hungry for, and then make an induction friendly version. I haven't experienced what you are going through, but during my first week ate lots of my favorite stuff, specifically grilled food. Try grilling a nice cut of meat with a good no sugar spiec rub, and some grilled asparagus marinated with olive oil and garlic. Yum! How could you go wrong there?

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

This has to be Psychosomatic in my opinion . Of course I am not a doctor:

My advice is to see your doctor and make sure he doesn't suspect anything physical.

If it does turn out to be mental try doing something to distract yourself while eating such as talking to a friend, watching TV, or something to distract your mind.

                    That and take your time.

My sister used to have the worst time doing dishes becuase for some reason it really grossed her out. She just took her time and eventually got over it. Her aversion to doign the dishes litterally manifested themselves in physical symptoms of gagging, vomiting, etc.

I've done this and it seems to be helping. I try to focus on something else while eating like reading a mag. or here at ADBB...and telling myself that I just have to swallow it. Before I was so focused on how I couldn't bear to swallow anything. Anyway, it's a lot less now, and I pretty much only get it when I eat lettuce so I'm trying other veggies now like cabbage which I love.

Thank you all for your replies and support! *hugs*

                        Oooooh, veggies!

green beans and asparagus. broccoli. cauliflower. cabbage! zucchini! cucumbers! spinach!

those are the ones I eat - i rarely actually eat salad myself. I like lettuce, but it becomes too annoying to have it be your ONLY vegetable and I'd rather just have 2 cups of something else rather than 3 cups of lettuce anyway.

Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

Have this problem too. It hits me in the morning when I have to face eggs for breakfast AGAIN. Other posters will say, "try having ______ for breakfast", which is always something I would never think of or want to eat in the morning, like canned tuna salad.

For a change, I am making flaxmeal/pork rind pancakes. The induction legal bread recipe on www.lowcarbrecipes.org was a bit like eating soggy rice cakes (I'll never understand what tastes good about those).

It's very hard to break food routines. And when it's the first thing to hit your stomach in the morning- it's even harder not to balk at repetitive or strange items.

                            Good luck,
