  • Chocolate mouse.. wow..

So my girlfriend is on Southbeach. I've been encouraging her since its a low carb diet and introducing her to Atkins a bit.

That said she still craving sweets. I'm not. I could do without..

Anyway. Tonight I made Chocolate Mouse from this recipe:

I replaced the chocolate with unsweetened chocolate (no carbs) and the sugar with Splenda.

Amazing! Just Amazing. Soooo delicious! Actually I used 4 packets of splenda and DANDR says to assume one packet == 1g of carbs.

That said I screwed up. I could have TOTALLY done this with 1 or two packets. Tomorrow when I make it for her I'm going to fold in thhe new batch with no Splenda to make it even have less carbs.

Its a perfect atkins treat really. Eggs, Whipped Cream, Butter, ...

I do have to admit that I was nervous about the Cream of Tartar but apparently its just pottassion tartate and there are other recipes here which call for it.

Another note is why can't we have beans during induction but coffee and chocolate is ok? How can that be possible?

I was thinking I could modify this recipe to make a coffee/chocolate dessert....

chocoloate is NOT okay during induction.... the idea of induction is to get over the sugar addiction which can take up to 14 days sometimes... finding a substitute does nothing but feed those ole cravings and increase the changes of wandering off...

stick to a clean induction and you won't crave... by trying to deviate and add to the induction you are only setting yourself up for disappointment, stalls and frustration..

hope this helps... please sure to the read the book.... it really is great information and it will arm you with the knowledge you need in order to do this correctly..

Chocolate has carbs. The unsweetened baking powdered cocoa has about 2-3 net carbs per tablespoon and the unsweetened blocks of baking chocolate have carbs too (not sure of the exact amount, so I don't want to give you bad info).

Chocolate is technically a seed. Granted some people believe that cocoa is a "spice" and therefore is allowed during Induction. I would agree IF the cocoa were used in "spice" amounts.

Dr. Atkins recommended several induction-friendly recipes that had chocolate in them.

Also a mocha slushie that has instant coffee in them.

Let's be clear: Chocolate in the sugary form is not allowed. Per Atkins himself, cocoa powder is acceptable on induction provided you count the carbs. Coffee is not forbidden, but it is recommended that we reduce the amounts we consume.

In addition, it's not true that we are supposed to avoid all sweet things entirely in induction. Dr. Atkins himself suggested a number of desserts to try that are high in fat and have few carbs. Yes, we are to try to eliminate our dependence on sugar. Yes, we are limited in the servings of sweetener to use each day. But eliminating entirely is neither realistic for many nor what Atkins said to do.

Actually, according to Dr. Atkins Health Revolution, Appendix A & B :

I generally allow the dieter artificial sweeteners in order to ease the transition away from sugar. This does not mean I consider them to be "health foods".
Health Revolution was written before there was an Atkins Nutritionals Inc. peddling candy bars, shakes, pudding mixes, cheesecakes, brownie mixes, cookie mixes, etc.

So the limitation of 3 sweetener servings daily is alittle bit more complex than the weight loss problems associated with artificial sweeteners. In fact, the sweetener limit doesn't change throughout the diet (that's a question we frequently get on the OWL forum).
