Re: !!!!MUST HAVE SOMETHING SWEET..NOW!!!!! any "safe" suggestions?

Dr. Atkins said that OCCASIONAL treats were fine, and he also advised for people to avoid them during induction. Daily treats are not occasional - and eating food when you're not physically hungry is never advisable - especially when these are the things that got us in trouble in the first place.

Does that mean that it's not okay to have something sweet occasionally? Of course not. Does it mean that you should allow your cravings to rule what you eat and when? Absolutely not.

We are in charge of what we eat. What we eat should not be in charge of us.

Induction is a time to bring it back to the basics and stop perpetuating the cravings by feeding them. It's a time to learn to eat and rely on whole, natural foods and a time to change our tastes and perceptions. There's a reason why people who have avoided sweets during induction tell others to avoid them too - because they know what they're saying to be absolutely true. Abstinance during induction really will put you back in charge of the cravings, and once you get past the original 14 measley days - then you can make decisions about what to add and see how you react. You can't know how you'll react without these things in your daily life is you don't even try or make a committment to do it.

Losing weight and inches is easy. <shrug> People lose tons of weight and inches every day. There's no magic in it. The magic is in keeping it off and making sure the habits that got us there in the first place are firmly in check. - Just ask those of us that got to goal and wound up having to bring it back in check again.

Feeding cravings doesn't make them go away, it perpetuates them and the mind set that it's okay to give in once in awhile. Isn't that the sort of thought process that got most of us in trouble in the first place??!! I know it was for me!

I'm sure someone will be along to give you ideas and tell you what you want to hear, but really, it's like the quote in my siggy says, "You have to stop trading what you want most for what you want at the moment."

If you're hungry, grab some protein and a bit of fat and feed the hunger - but don't take orders from an M&M!!

....except that Dr. Atkins said a dessert is fine every day, so long as you don't go over your splenda allowance. I'm staring at his article as I type..........

But everyone needs to figure out what works for themselves....

I tried the 'Mock Danish' that is in the Stickies in this forum and it has a definate dessert feel to it...enough in fact that I was thinking of making more an evening snack than a breakfast. I used 1 tsp lemon juice instead of vanilla though. Hmmm...or maybe I should leave it as a breakfast food since I never did a lot of 'dessert' after dinner before anyway.

Brook with all due respect, I don't find that losing weight and inches is easy...but that may be just me hey?

Fin I have to agree with you, once past induction it has to be an individual choice. Just because I indulge myself in a decaf coffee daily with a dash of DaVinci syrup, doesn't mean to me that I allowed myself a treat. This is a way of life for me for the rest of my life. I don't indulge in low carb cakes n cookies, I don't gobble up cream cheese. I use cream cheese as an emerg TOM measure only. I am not going to deprive myself forever. Dr Atkins had alot to say, and I agree with him on most. But I have to live with this for the rest of my life. I will do it in a way that I can be successful, and committed for life. Each to their own certainly.

Star- it's time consuming, but it is the easy part of this journey. Like I said, there's no magic in it. People lose hundreds of pounds over the course of their lives - but they don't keep it off - and that's what I was referring to. You're entitled to disagree, but once you hit goal it may change your perspective. I always thought after I hit goal it would be smooth sailing and have found that maintenance is 10 times the work weight loss ever was. That's just my opinion.

Finelly- I've read the vast majority of the articles and understand where you're coming from, but it's the book that I go back to every time and in his book he says occasionally does not = every day.

As Star said - to each their own - but when people are being driven by their cravings and not planning a menu to follow and including a treat in there here and there - I will - as I've done for the last 3 1/2 years - advise them to not take orders from an M&M - even if it's a low carb one.

Absolutely I agree that a person is destined for a very slow loss if they are eating treats every day. Sure! But that doesn't mean they will fail.

I have watched my mom on maintenance for the past year and a half. She said its so easy. She eats low carb, and is not losing or gaining weight. She is healthy and is certainly not feeling deprived.

And Brook, I ...like you...hit goal once already! And did very well with it until my father committed suicide due to his physical pain. I fell off and gained alot back.

I didn't follow the Atkins religion to the letter. I figured out over time what made me crave, what made me stall, what I could and couldn't get away with. I wasn't cheating left right and center, I was being a realist. It worked well for me.

{{Hug}} I always say to my best girlfriends..."we can just agree to disagree"

Star- I think that's fantastic. For the scores of people that email me via my website and the people I talk to at various forums - I think it's fabulous that your mom finds it easy - but I'm not sure she's the rule so much as the exception. I sure hope she's the rule! LOL I want her to be the rule so it's easier for me. LOL!

I'm so sorry about your dad, Star. I didn't know, and my heart hurts for you and your family.

I never said treats every day would make someone fail - just that I wouldn't recommend it or continuing to use food as a coping method, salve for the soul, or something I take orders from. But like we've both said - we all have to find what works for us and we can only give others advice based on our own experiences.

I'm not sure that we are disagreeing. LOL If we are - then we can absolutely agree to disagree And as for the hug - back atcha ((((Star))))
