Is what we eat at restaurants our responsibility? Absolutely - which is precisely why I ceased to eat the remainder of the following burger as soon as I discovered the highly irregular item placed in the center of it.
Today at Carl's Jr., I ordered the Western Bacon Cheeseburger, which I had prepared via the "low carb option" - which means wrapped in lettuce. After saying that I preferred it prepared low-carb/bunless, I asked if there was ketchup that came with the burger. When she said there was BBQ sauce, I substituted this for mayonnaise.
There was no description by means of either photo or text of this burger on the menu, so one can only assume that it contains extras like onions, lettuce, ketchup and/or mayo and/or mustard, tomato, pickles, and the like.
Once getting about 50% into this burger, I noticed something tasted sweet and onion-y in the center. Onions! Okay, no problem. Sautéed onions taste sweet, which is why I love them and always order them extra with my burgers at restaurants. Well, once I got 75% into the burger, I noticed that it tasted rather gritty. After opening up the sandwich, I did notice something round and circular, and it was breaded. Appalled, I immediately signed online to look at their website menu description for this sandwich. There are two onion rings included in the Western Bacon Cheeseburger - and this fact is NOT mentioned by the very name of the burger, nor in their menu description for the burger, nor shown in any photo on the menu. I just ate one out of the two onion rings without knowing it.
In my 4+ years of low-carbing, this is my first-ever wholly avoidable "slip" due to these kinds of careless circumstances. This matter is currently being dealt with; but in the meantime, I wanted to relay this FYI for those who may frequent Carl's Jr. Whether an Atkins/low-carb follower is far away from goal, near goal, or at goal is of no consequence in a situation like this one. Ordering something specifically as a "low-carb option" should be prepared and served as such - and if a surprise, completely-random item such as a breaded onion ring is included in a burger, it must be cited in its description on the menu, or at the very least visible by means of a photo of the burger. What if a customer were to have a severe wheat allergy?
To anyone who isn't a low-carber, this is small potatoes - even snicker-worthy. ("How neurotic!") But for someone who doesn't mess around with the foods they eat, this is useful information. I hope all of you are having a good weekend. Happy Low-Carbing.
