  • Carl's Jr. - BEWARE

Is what we eat at restaurants our responsibility? Absolutely - which is precisely why I ceased to eat the remainder of the following burger as soon as I discovered the highly irregular item placed in the center of it.

Today at Carl's Jr., I ordered the Western Bacon Cheeseburger, which I had prepared via the "low carb option" - which means wrapped in lettuce. After saying that I preferred it prepared low-carb/bunless, I asked if there was ketchup that came with the burger. When she said there was BBQ sauce, I substituted this for mayonnaise.

There was no description by means of either photo or text of this burger on the menu, so one can only assume that it contains extras like onions, lettuce, ketchup and/or mayo and/or mustard, tomato, pickles, and the like.

Once getting about 50% into this burger, I noticed something tasted sweet and onion-y in the center. Onions! Okay, no problem. Sautéed onions taste sweet, which is why I love them and always order them extra with my burgers at restaurants. Well, once I got 75% into the burger, I noticed that it tasted rather gritty. After opening up the sandwich, I did notice something round and circular, and it was breaded. Appalled, I immediately signed online to look at their website menu description for this sandwich. There are two onion rings included in the Western Bacon Cheeseburger - and this fact is NOT mentioned by the very name of the burger, nor in their menu description for the burger, nor shown in any photo on the menu. I just ate one out of the two onion rings without knowing it.

In my 4+ years of low-carbing, this is my first-ever wholly avoidable "slip" due to these kinds of careless circumstances. This matter is currently being dealt with; but in the meantime, I wanted to relay this FYI for those who may frequent Carl's Jr. Whether an Atkins/low-carb follower is far away from goal, near goal, or at goal is of no consequence in a situation like this one. Ordering something specifically as a "low-carb option" should be prepared and served as such - and if a surprise, completely-random item such as a breaded onion ring is included in a burger, it must be cited in its description on the menu, or at the very least visible by means of a photo of the burger. What if a customer were to have a severe wheat allergy?

To anyone who isn't a low-carber, this is small potatoes - even snicker-worthy. ("How neurotic!") But for someone who doesn't mess around with the foods they eat, this is useful information. I hope all of you are having a good weekend. Happy Low-Carbing.

Wow, they stick a breaded onion ring in their burgers and don't even list it as an ingredient? That's not right. Like you said, what if someone had a wheat allergy and chowed down on that thing?

Thank you for that information, Sheila! I agree that they should mention things like this somewhere for the consumers.

I completely agree Sheila. If I wasn't low-carbing, I would have laughed at the onion ring in the burger but now that I'm definitely serious about my diet, I consider it a grave sin not to inform the customers exactly what they're eating.

BTW, got the cookbooks today and all I kept saying was, "Wow, I can eat that?", turning the pages like a mad woman. I went to the grocery store today to get a lot of the ingredients. So excited! Also, I bought the callanetics VHS after reading the information on your website. I did my first callanetics workout tonight and I can feel my muscles "released" from all the stretches. I was so into it that I was quite surprised when it ended. It did not feel like 1 hr, more like 30 min. Thanks so much for everything!

Actually I did know that...my sister used to binge on them regularly. This is an excellent reminder that when we order out, we need to be sure and ask "What exactly is in this?" before we order or eat it. Unfortunately, photos and sometimes even descriptions don't give the whole story...

            Re: Carl's Jr. - BEWARE

Had I been at, say, Sonic and had gotten their Grilled Chicken Salad with that completely random onion ring placed atop it, I would have thought "Oh my!" while picking it off, and would have gotten right over it - since it wasn't hidden. (In addition, it is responsibly mentioned upfront in both the description and in a photo of the salad on the Sonic menu.)

Believe me, if I had bitten into this Carl's Jr. burger yesterday and tasted a sugary secret sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce, or anything else customary of a burger that I failed to ask about, it would have 100% been my own fault. But to hide something completely random and breaded that is both unmentioned and hidden in the center of a burger that was specifically ordered bunless and low-carb is what had gotten my goat.

              Re: Carl's Jr. - BEWARE

I totally agree with you Sheila that it should have been mentioned somewhere on the menu if for some weird reason someone in the company has decided it is a 'lowcarb' food item.
It would be interesting to hear how they justify its 'secret' addition to a lowcarb menu item. Do update us on what they say when they respond to your complaint.

                  Re: Carl's Jr. - BEWARE

The only time I ate the low carb option burger at Hardee's (my part of the country's Carl Jr.'s), I was perplexed at how the burger itself tasted. I was convinced it had fillers! It did not taste like a normal beef patty. The website says otherwise, but I still don't want to eat there again, plus it costs way more than McD or BK.
