  • hebrew national deli meats: bologna, beef franks, salami etc...

    Hi everyone!
Lately school has started and I have had less and less time to cook food. I went to the store to get some deli meats and came across Hebrew National.
I know alot of meat products contain sugar etc but Hebrew national says "no byproducts, no artificial colors or flavors". They also contian little or no carbs. Some of the beef even has 0g of carbs. Some salami/beef franks have 1g of carbs per serving. I was wondering where this 1g of carbs came from?
    Is there hidden sugar somewhere?
Here are the ingredients: beef, water, 2% or less of flavorings, garlic powder, hydrolized soy protein, paprika, potassium, sodium lactate, salt, sodium diacetate, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrite, spice.
Maybe the spices or something contain some sugar???
Is it ok to eat these still?

also, I read alot of people concerned about the sodium in deli meats. What of you boil the hot dogs or wash the bologna before warming it?
    Will the salt wash off?
And besides, I drink about 3/4 a gallon of water a day. Will it really be bad for me to eat 2-3 slices of bologna a day and maybe a hot dog or two?
Because its so convenient, so high in fat, and a good amt of protein too!

    Thanks

I use Hebrew Nation products because they are kosher.

Salami and beef franks might still have some sugar in them. I know the low-fat HN hot-dogs have sugar in them.

Granted, Atkins said to stay away from nitrates and nitrites because he believed them to be carcinogenic.

Don't worry so much about the sodium, if the HN products are used sparingly.

garlic powder, paprika, lactate, spice all have carbs so there are your carbs. SOme of the skins are made from veggies and contain carbs for deli sauages and winers.

If you want it the ingedients are acceptable just count your carbs.

      HAppy low carbing.

so what about the whole water retention thing?
I dont quite understand this...If you take in too much sodium, Water stays in your body? technically, doesnt it have to come out sooner or later? Isnt it just water weight?

And should i worry about this If i drink a good amount of water?

(sorry to be repetitive, but im still not sure)

If the HN products are the only processed foods you eat during the day, your sodium levels with be much lower. Also, this diet is a natural diuretic and flushes out a lot of water. I lost 19 pounds my first 5 days back on induction, most of it water!

if your body has a sodium hang uop then the added sodium could cause fluid retention and that can cause blood pressure increase for some folk.

Cleo is right that Atkins is a natural diurectic program witht he 30% proteins some of the induction veggies being natural diuretics too and the loss of the stored water with the stored glycogen but other issues such as starting exercise or increasing ions can cause some of us to retain fluids so that is one of those your milage will vary things.
