  • Has Anyone Had Weight Loss Success Whilst Using Shakes ?

    Hi everyone,

I have never used shakes before but I was thinking about having a shake, probably for breakfast, this time around.

However, I have seen that according to ADBB shakes are not legal during induction. Even tho in DANDR it does permit the shakes.

I have also noticed that some people who have used the shakes previously have stalled or not lost at all whilst using the shakes.

However, I was wondering if there are people who have used the shakes and who HAVE lost?

Louise, unfortunately, at ADBB we cannot and do not endorse the use of products such as shakes or low-carb bars on 14-day induction, with the exception of emergencies.

The reason for this is that they are meant for use only in extreme situations or emergencies when there is nothing else for you to have, and it saves you from eating something you REALLY ought not have.

While on induction, Dr Atkins wanted us to totally detox from the foods which made us crave more foods and more foods (and more, etc), so his thoughts were that to wean ourselves fully from sugars and sugar alcohols was the only way for the cravings to stop.

There is an excellent thread regarding shakes you CAN have in induction. I'll look for it and post the link here for you!

Re: Has Anyone Had Weight Loss Success Whilst Using Shakes ?

this is just my opinion, but i never used the shakes because i like to chew food. i like to taste food. i like to smell and lick and swirl delicious food around in my mouth and savor all the flavors.
food is a sensuous experience for me.

the reason atkins works for me is because i really love to eat food and i'm not trying to change that. in fact, i'm embracing that about me.

i love to have a big yummy breakfast. usually i crave bacon and eggs. i think that the taste of butter i use to cook the eggs and the grease on the bacon gives my brain a signal that i'm being well fed and it is safe to release my fat stores.

personally, a shake would not satisfy my mind, therefore I doubt it would give my brain the "i'm well fed" chemical signal. just the opposite in fact. i'd never use a shake when i can have real food!

focusing on long term mental satisfaction as opposed to gimmicks or tricks is the way to suceed in this wonderful, healing WOL.

Louise, Louise, Louise. Stick to natural, not packaged foods. Stick to induction-legal foods. You know better than this. You do! I know you do!

Come on, girl. Follow the Induction Rules.

Yep. You are correct on both counts. However, did you happen to notice *when* Dr. Atkins said it was okay to use the shakes? As Cleo points out, they're for *occasional* use only and in the case of *emergencies*. I have yet to come across such an "emergency" in 3 1/2 years on plan. And truthfully, if you can walk into a store and buy a shake, you can walk into the same store and buy something legal to eat.

If the concern is time, then we've got a whole different issue going on and that's easy enough to address too!

I have also noticed that some people who have used the shakes previously have stalled or not lost at all whilst using the shakes.
Again, correct, and that should speak volumes to you! Really, putting things into your body that require a degree in chemical engineering to pronounce hasn't worked for us in the past - this really is no different!

However, I was wondering if there are people who have used the shakes and who HAVE lost?

Are there people? Yep. There are. In my experience they're the exception and not the rule. tabekat has a wonderful point - They are gimmicky. Learning to eat and rely on real food as your staple is the best and smartest way to go. It's the way that will carry you through any time and any situation anywhere!

If I do have a shake, it's a homemade one. I know exactly what's in it, how much of what, and it's made from REAL food. Variety is important, for sure, but variety doesn't have to come in a can or bag!

Amen to what Brook says! Check the other "shakes" thread in this forum! Sugar Free Sheila has an excellent shake idea made with pumpkin! It looks absolutely yummy!

Re: Has Anyone Had Weight Loss Success Whilst Using Shakes ?

I hate to step out here on a limb here when I'm still so new to ADBB, but...

although I do agree with what the other members are advising -- I am the exception to that rule. I'm in extended Induction and ocassionally I will use a shake for breakfast.

I just don't make the time in the morning for breakfast. I would rather go without honestly, during the week (on weekends, I make huge breakfasts as it is my favorite meal!), but I know that's bad for me, too. I do NOT use them everyday. I will buy a four-pk and use one here and there. Other times, I'll eat a really small breakfast, like one of my pre-measured snack baggies of cheese or go to the Food Court and get eggs and sausage. I have lost weight with them in MY plan, but...

I do agree - try to stay on whole foods and keep away from the processed "low-carb" emergency stuff. Also remember the YMMV rule -- (YOUR mileage may vary).

              My two cents...

                That's extended induction.

Here in this particular forum we deal only with 14-day! *smacking your tushy*

Please do not confuse me because the air pressure in my head is low this evening!

The shakes in 14-day induction especially are meant to be a very rare occasion of ginormous proportions. Extended induction, the rules might be a little more lenient, especially if you are following a modified OWL program!

Just want to throw that out there for everyone!

Simply addressing the question asked, I have used the atkins brand Chocolate Delight shakes and have continued to lose weight. However I defintly wouldn't recommend them for induction but figured I could at least answer the generic question.

I had shakes in the morning sometimes for breakfast the last time I did Atkins & they made me incredibly hungry, (for carbs) I would not recommend them.

                          Thank you for your replies.

All the times I have done Atkins I have NEVER had a shake but I was just wondering about them, as I have seen them mentioned many times before.
